Turkeys and Scent

Soo question is how good can they smell? I'll be a first time/self taught turkey hunter on the 25th. I've had my head buried in every once of info I can try and get. Obviously they can see like a hawk but I can't really find any info on their sense of smell. So how good is it? And will it help me out at all if I decent everything like I do for deer?

The only time I hear mention of sense of smell with turkeys is when someone is pulling the leg of a new hunter, or that if they could smell you'd never kill one.

Not just turkeys, but birds in general to now have a sense of smell, except maybe for vultures (and that is up for debate)

just put it this way....if they smell you, its time for your monthly bath at the lake

Lol..maybe I'll take a dip in the swamp. So still de-sent, or not? I'm gonna side with the biologist for now...its his job to know these things.

It still pays to stay clean while hunting any critter. I am sure you have a deer population in your area. A deer that smells you while turkey hunting will still blow a warning. This has blown more than one turkey hunt for me! Good luck! Turkey hunting is a blast!

That's a very good point that I would have never thought of. There is absolutely deer on the property that I will be hunting. Just ask the 5 in my freezer /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
