Turning 223 brass into 6x45

I'm fairly new to reloading and ventured into a 6x45 build with a BHW 18 barrel in an AR platform.. My understanding is that you can use spent 223 brass for your 6x45 ammo. I've never loaded ammo that was made bigger in diameter.. I've made casings smaller but never bigger... Is this a smooth process using the dies for 6x45 or is there issues when making the 223 casing into 6mm??? Any and all input and experiences would be greatly appreciated...I have Varget and IMR 8208 on hand.. Which do you recommend?? And what bullet??

Thanks for the good news... I was at class tonite and the instructor had some concerns regarding the brass being "expanded" or enlarged... Thanks for the replies... If anyone has suggestions on powder Varget vs IMR 8208 I'm all ears.. Or in this case eyes!!! Thanks again!!

It's a very easy process to neck up .223 brass to 6x45. One pass through a die is all it takes and it's necked up. Champher the case mouth a bit and your good to go.

I use Hornady New Dimension 6mm-.223 full length dies. So far I have only necked up new .223 brass and fire-formed it while hunting. Accuracy is very good and I hunt with loads being fire-formed.

As to powder and bullets, there's a good post of 6x45 load data sent in my members. Here's the link:

Personally I have been using 75 gr. Sierra hollow points and H335 with great results on predators. It's a great coyote bullet, but a bit tough on fox. Bobcats are middle-of-the-road so to speak with regards to pelt damage.

The 6x45 is a great predator cartridge, and it works ok for deer too.

just run it thru the die and your done and don't worry about expanding the case neck, XBR 8208 is my Powder of choice and the 6x45 is my favorite caliber in the AR platform...

As the others said, just lube well and resize. I run one of these and the resizing seems a bit more "smooth" but certainly not necessary. As for powders, I settled on the IMR 8208 and has performed very well with the 75gr bullet range. From several thousand, many from "once shot" brass, I can only recall splitting a few cases.

70 gr Speer TNT's and 8208 are a decent combo...

These guys have covered it. Easy as can be...

The only thing that I have to add is that you should share info if you get that BHW barrel to shoot... I have tried A LOT of combinations in mine and can't get it to shoot... I've even sent it back and got a new barrel to no avail.

Hey Brian....did you ever try any 60gr Sierra HP or 70 gr SMK's? IIRC, those shot very well with multiple powders out of my 18" BHW barrel.

Brian, You and I must have barrels alike. Mine won't shoot worth a hoot either. It has been back to them 2 times to no avail. Going to rebarrel it and use the old one as a pry bar.

I will most defiantly share my loads and development.. Gun is being built as we speak... I appreciate the info and will hopefully have some results reported back ASAP!!! I'm very grateful for everyone's suggestions, tips and replies!!!

just run it thur the die like you were loading anything else theres no special process to it.... before i got my ch 6x45 dies i would fl size them with a 223 die and open it up by running it into a 6mm die.... took longer but it worked fine

It is 18"s! FPS 2985fps, I run moly along with a suppressor also. it actually shoots better than this but I have over 800 rounds thru it now with only running a kroil oil patch down it once in a while and it wears a NF 2.5-10x32mm now also.
