Two good coyote calling stands today.

On our 4th or 5th stand this morning I was sitting in some sage brush with my shotgun about 15 yards from the Foxpro X24 and my buddy JP7mag was sitting on a ridge behind me with his 243 Win.
At around 8 to 10 minutes into calling I spotted a dark coyote running in towards me at a very high rate of speed. As soon as this coyote got past the Foxpro I shot it with my shotgun with a 1-1/2 oz load of TSS #2 shot.

I put another shell in my gun and when I Iooked up I saw another coyote flying in real fast also. So I shot it when it cleared the Foxpro. The first coyote was a big male and the second one was a smaller female.

Two stands later JP7mag was on a ridge behind me and I was down in the brush with my shotgun again. After we had called for 7 or 8 minutes I heard JP7mag shoot and then I saw a coyote jumping around in the brush about 80 yards from me. Then I saw another coyote run through the brush pretty close to the first coyote. JP7mag shot again and put the second coyote down. There was only about 5 seconds between those two shots and JP7mag had a double down on the ground.

JP7mag also killed a male and a female with his 243 Win.

We made 3 more blank stands and then called it a day.

It was a good day.

Are those shotgun loads 3”? How does #2 shot kill coyotes? I’ve been using #4 buck forever but my supply is dwindling and I’m not as impressed by my 3-1/2” recoil anymore.

Runners in the sage---sounds like a good song title. I think the music has already been written by the Doors. Thanks

TSS #3 and #4 shot work great on coyotes and have 2 to 3 times more pellets per 1-1/2 oz load than a 1-7/8 oz load of Number 4 buckshot.

TSS shot is very hard and is about 56% denser than lead shot is. Look below at how TSS shot compares to lead shot with KPY Shotshell Ballistics. I came up with 3.70" of gel penetration needed to reliably break down or kill coyotes that weigh 35 pounds and less.

1300 fps lead BB shot gets 3.70" of gel penetration at 46.1 yards and has about 77 pellets in 1-1/2 oz.
1300 fps TSS #4 shot gets 3.70" of gel penetration at 78.9 yards and has about 125 pellets in 1-1/2 oz.

1300 fps TSS #2 shot gets 3.70" of gel penetration at 115.5 yards and has about 81 pellets in 1-1/2 oz.
1300 fps lead #2 shot gets 3.70" of gel penetration at 19.6 yards and has about 133 pellets in 1-1/2 oz.
