Ultimate Coyote Shotgunning

Hey everyone. I’ve been hunting coyotes for a few years now and have been shotgunning since day one. I’ve always packed a rifle and shotgun but prefer the shotgun when possible. I’ve tried Remington lead 3” 4 buck and 00 buck. Also tried Hornady magnum coyote BB and 00. I’m now using due to the shortage of ammo tungsten BB hevi shot waterfowl loads because they’re all I can find. Though I’ve killed plenty of coyotes with all of them I’ve also had some runners. I think I’m ready to start reloading for the shotgun to find the best load to kill dogs with. I know if I hunt enough I’ll still have some runners but I’d like to really cut down on those numbers at extended ranges (40-50+ yards). Been looking at T shot and TSS shots but am new to realoading shotguns. Been loading for rifles a few years so I’m familiar with that but don’t know a ton about shotguns. All you shotgun guys why do you guys have luck with at more extended range coyotes?

i've done my share of calling coyotes and killing them with a shotgun.

it is expensive as [beeep], even to roll ur own, but tss shot is the best there is. hands down.

The only good Hevi-Shot loads for coyotes would be the Hevi-Shot Goose loads in size B shot or the Hevi-Shot Dead Coyote T shot loads. These two loads have denser than lead 12g/cc shot in them. They come in 10 shells per box for $4.50 per shell or more.

Buying the lead buckshot from Ballistic Products Inc in sizes BBB or T shot would give you good 3" 1-1/2 oz coyote loads that would give you about 10 more yards killing range than the lead BB coyote loads. These lead loads would be quite a bit cheaper than the better performing denser than lead Tungsten alloy loads or TSS loads.

For quite a bit more money you can load HW13 BB shot that Bucks Run Sports Supply sells or really spend the big bucks and buy some TSS #2, #3 or #4 shot. Bucks Run Sports Supply you have to order by phone. 1-507-356-2195

No matter how good your coyote shotgun shells are it is easy to have runners because you can't always have perfect shot angles and you can't always center the pattern on the coyotes. With a shotgun keep shooting them if they are still moving.

Thanks for the replies guys, I really don’t mind if it’s as expensive as dead coyote. If I wanted to save money I’d quit hunting coyotes lol do they only make TSS in #2 and #4? And are there any tricks or anything I need to know when reloading buck shot or anything?

I think TSS #3 shot is about the perfect size for coyotes. I got 100 pellets per shell in my 3" 1-1/2 oz re-loads.

You can reload TSS coyote loads for about the same price you can buy Hevi-Shot Dead Coyote T shot loads. With TSS #3 shot you will have twice as many pellets per shell than the Dead Coyote T shot loads have.

Below is what KPY Shotshell Ballistics shows for 3.70" of gel penetration and 1-1/2 ounce of shot. They recommend 2.50" of gel penetration for big honkers, I came up with 3.70" of gel penetration needed for small coyotes.

Hevi-Shot T shot at 1300 fps gets 3.70" of gel penetration at 85.0 yards. With 50 pellets per shell.
TSS #4 shot at 1300 fps gets 3.70" of gel penetration at 78.9 yards. With 124 pellets per shell.
TSS #3 shot at 1300 fps gets 3.70" of gel penetration at 96.8 yards. With 100 pellets per shell.
Lead BB shot at 1300 fps gets 3.70" of gel penetration at 46.1 yards. With 77 pellets per shell.
Lead BBB shot at 1300 fps gets 3.70" of gel penetration at 55.8 yards. With 65 pellets per shell.
Lead T shot at 1300 fps gets 3.70" of gel penetration at 66 yards. With 56 pellets per shell.

If you reloaded a 12 ga 3" 1-5/8 oz load of lead T shot it would give you 60 pellets per shell. Lead T shot out performs lead BB shot by quite a bit and has 19 more pellets per shell than a 3" 1-7/8 oz load of Number 4 buckshot. 1-5/8 oz of lead BBB shot would have right at 70 pellets per shell, 29 more pellets per shell than lead number 4 buckshot.

Waymore, I sent you a PM.
