Unusual or different calls

Any of you guys using a different or "out-of the-ordinary" device as a hand caller? I added a Primos crow caller to my calls; by putting pressure on the mouthpiece I can get barks, yips, and even make a crying kitten distress sound. Let's hear your unusual ideas that make some neat noises to attract those dogs and foxes............

I often use a crow call, hawk call and even a squirrel call on stand to add realism. I don't know that it matters, but I have had a lot of coyotes come in when I used the hawk call first and then a cottontail call.

Al,

I just ordered a couple of those Audabon bird callers, the metal against birch ones that you twist to make chirping sounds. I'll be carrying them out to stand as well, and I am anxious to see how well they work, especially at night close to the ground................

Now that's a good idea. I keep a diaphram turkey call in my mouth when I am walking to my stands. If I step on something or make a noise, I give a few clucks or a yelp. We have a lot of turkeys here, and one of the best E call sounds I have used is the Johnny Stewart Gobbler Distress call. I've even used that in conjunction with one of my turkey decoys before and have coyotes and fox come to it.

I wonder how those bird calls would work for fox and bobcats? They might be fun to play with sometime. I will have to check them out.

Well, I figure if you sit tight on the ground, make some noise like a small animal thrashing around in the leaves, and use that bird call, it might be akin to the lipsqueak to "lock 'em in" so to speak and get them a little closer, I plan on putting it on my lanyard as well, fox should come in close for that, and since no bobcat permit here, I don't believe there are any near us anyway, I'll just have to deal with the fox and yotes /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif............

P.S. Fox season starts on Oct 15th, can't wait........yotes all year round here, including Sunday

P.P.S. That turkey call is a great idea to cover your "tracks" so to speak, I thought about doing the same thing with the bird call while deer hunting..

I'm also going to be posting a picture of the rig I use for fox and yotes, a nice bucket setup to carry all my gear into the field.........

Well heck! I thought I had a new idea. I've had one for years, but just took it out for the first time Friday when Elkaholic and I went calling. It sounds pretty good in the woods. Be sure to post your results.

"I keep a diaphragm turkey call in my mouth when I am walking to my stands."

How would you convince a Conservation Agent that you are not turkey hunting???

In this area, if you have ANY kind of turkey caller in your possession, (except inside a vehicle), then you are deemed to be attempting to kill a turkey. Every spring, near the end of coyote season on March 31st, my son and I can count on being checked for turkey callers, while we are coyote hunting.

I have played with a diaphragm caller and can get some decent (to me) sounds out of it, but I don't want the risk of a poaching ticket. It is difficult enough to convince landowners that you are not interested in their deer or turkeys.

Recently, I was recommended by the local game warden to a landowner with a predator problem. Another landowner contacted me about shooting coyotes on his property, and even offered to pay for this!!!

Anyhow, was curious if you had ever been confronted by CA or any enforcement people.

I don't know if a diaphragm caller that is stamped "Predator Call" would be enough proof. I think Quaker Boy makes one that is marked this way.

In regard to the original question about unusual calls, I recently picked up a Hunter's Specialties Wayne Carlton "Fight'n Cow" elk call that looks like it would make a good predator call. I'm going elk hunting in about 2 weeks, and bought this call for the upcoming trip.

It is an open-reed call, about the size of a Tally-Ho. I can get some good sounds out of it, and am looking forward to using it this winter to see if I can call a coyote with it.

Let me get this straight, You're saying that you can be ticketed for having a call in your possession that "could" be used to call turkeys!! Isn't that like saying, "if you own a gun you're a criminal?"
Guilty until proven innocent is what that sounds like!

Carltons fightn cow call. yep, killed many dogs with it. sounds like most open reeds. Killed even more with primos hyper lip single, also a cow call. If I'm makin noise on the way to the stand I generally give a couple cow (elk) mews. or sometimes a moo cow moo, depending on the area.

I've even called in and killed a couple using a double reed diaphragm to make the dyign something or other call, this works well on bears.

Afraid that is right Song Dog. In several states in the east you can and will be ticketed for having a turkey call in your possesion, in the field, at certain times of the year. Ky happens to be one of them! Just one of many crazy laws we deal with. Jimmie

Wow. That is a tough law for sure. And if it applies to where you live then my suggestion was a BAD one.

It is not that way here in New Hampshire. We have our share of funny laws, but having a call in your posssession is not one of them. I have a Remmington 597 in 17 HMR that I like to shoot crows with. It holds 8 rounds in the clip, but our laws say only 5 rounds in a clip unless it is a 22 rimfire. They laws have not caught up with the new cartidges, so I only load up 5 rounds. Funny law, but it is the law. No athey have never checked me.

Each state is different and it is good that someone was on the ball and maybe saved someone some heartburn.

One thing I have in my advantage is that I live in a pretty small state. We do not have all that many CO's. It is pretty easy to get to know them, and most are pretty decent guys. If you take the tiime to introduce yourself, let them know what you are doing and that you are an Honest and Ethical hunter by your actions and deeds, I think it would go a long way. In a larger state, it might be harder to do this, and for guys who travel to hunt probably impossable.

There are a few CO's here in New Hampshire that have THO predator calls /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif They know my Jeep, and they know what I am doing if they see it parked somewhere, and they know that I am usually good for a free cup of coffee if they seem me coming out of the woods.

Anyway, it pays to know the laws in your area. Just becasue something works in one place does not mean it is legal in another.

Thanks for catching that and bringing it up. It might have saved someone a fine.

AL, it was a very good sugestion. Diaphram calls can be and are very useful in some situations.

All states are diferent and we do need to keep up with them. Including any changes made from year to year. This happens more regularly than we think now. Laws that stood for twenty or more years have been changed in Ky this past year

My turkey call law is in effect from mar 1 to may 31, with the exception of turkey season. It is said to keep the birds from becoming call shy /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif But it is perfectly legal to use a diaphram caller at other times of the year such as in the fall. Of course the bow turkey season is in at that time as well.

Another crazy law is no e-callers for furbearers. This YEAR they added furbearer status to coyotes. Yet the law also states e-callers may be used for coyotes since they are considered pest's. And I haven't gotten a straight ansewr yet on this. The way I understand it is I can't use an e-caller during the furbearer season no matter what animals I am hunting. That puts e-callers off limits from nov 15 through febuary 15. The rest of the year I can use them all I want /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif Not that I use one on a regular basis, but I would like the option when calling a problem animal.

So guy's be sure you check your own states laws before you try what you may read here. Not all of our laws are the same. And you never know what changes may have been made unless you check them each year. Jimmie

I use the same technique while bear hunting, only I use a cow chirp to cover any noise I may make. Killed a few bears this way.

...SongDog...sad, but true.

Every year, there will be someone in this area that gets a ticket for having a turkey caller in his possession while carrying a firearm or bow, except during turkey season. And then, they had best have the correct permit.

As you said, "Guilty until proven innocent."

Of course, you can go to court, miss a couple of days of work, maybe hire a lawyer, and still lose!!! To add insult to unjury, you may have to pay court costs.

Or,... you can pay a $50 fine, a few bucks court costs, and go on your way. (which is what most guys do).

My son and I get checked, usually in the Spring, near the last of coyote season. A time or two, it has been difficult to convince the CA that coyotes is what we were trying to call. Even though we had 3 or 4 calls and a howler each, they still frisked us, and looked inside our hatbands, side pockets, etc., trying to find any kind of turkey caller.

I realize their reasons, but not everybody is a poacher. We have a few "pre-season hunters" who try to get a jump on the turkey season, as soon as the turkeys start gobbling.

Anyhow, that's how it is, here in southern Missouri.

Someday, I'm going to ask the agent about a diaphragm caller for predators, just to hear his answer. Should be interesting.

Got those callers in the mail today, and I'm now chirping away and practicing with one. Even got a distress sound out of it re woodpecker. Man this is gonna be fun............

Hey, could you throw up a link or PM me with one on where I might find those calls. I am sure I could Google it up, but hey, I'm lazy /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thanks

No kidding. Well, guess I best take a look over there. Problem is, every time I go to GameCalls.net or AllPredatorCalls.com, I come away a lot more broke than I should be LOL

Thanks for the tip.

I used to have one of those when I was in the Boy Scouts, the exact same thing in fact.... and for some weird reason the thought came to me to see if I could find one again for preds. Mom's got a box of my junk still at the house from when I was a brat, I bet that darn thing is in there someplace.....
