I talked with the owner of Allpredatorcalls. AP Jones is walking encyclopedia about predator calls. He has tried every call in every imaginable circumstance (or so it seems).
AP Jones says that the type of animal making the distress does NOT need to be indigenous to the area. A couple of examples:
When he was calling in the deserts of Arizona he found the snowshoe hare distress to be one of the most effective even though the snowshoe hare has not inhabited that region for over 1000 years (according to him).
Fawn distress. He has a particular whitetail fawn distress that he likes and has used it to call predators in areas that are mule deer only. He found they responded better to the Whitetail than they did a Mulie distress because that particular Whitetail distress was a better quality recording.
According to him the quality of the recording is the joker in the deck when it comes to distress calls.
I have had good success with the Lightning Jack.
