Vanguard issue . . . need suggestions

I bought a new timney trigger for my .300 weatherby vanguard. The trigger is excellent and from what I can tell has nothing to do with the issue I'm about to tell you about. I followed the instructions that timney includes with the trigger. Everything went fine until I ran the bolt. Something was caught at the rear of the action. I took the trigger off and that didn't solve the issue. Looking in the action I could see some thin metal wadded up between the bolt lugs and the receiver. So basically this metal was in the way of the bolt to the point it wouldn't allow it to travel the length of the action. I couldn't get the bolt out and I couldn't tell where the material originated. After a while I loosed the metal and got it out and took the bolt out. I reassembled the rifle and now can tell that the metal that was in the way came from the bolt release. Now I have a bolt release lever that is always pressed and allows the bolt to come out every time I work the action. I don't know how the metal got caught in there and after having this rifle for nearly 12 years I have never encountered ANY issues with it. Now what? I can't shoot it like this. I know I'll have to take it to a gunsmith. I really want to avoid shipping it to the company, but I guess if I have to I will. Thoughts?

FWIW, I had some minor issue when I was looking at a Timney trigger for a Model 7. I ended up calling Timney, in AZ I thought. The guy that answered was up the chain a bit and very knowledgeable about my question, his advice put me on track.

If your trigger is actually made for that gun I think you can work through it. I would try calling Timney during business hours and see if they can help you. I hate sending guns off unless other options are exhausted. The next step may be a qualified local smith.

Just rereading your post, it sounds like the problem is nothing to do with the new trigger? Just cropped up when you put the new trigger in? If that is the case you may have to do a local gunsmith option.

I had a gun problem a handful of years ago, couldn't figure out why a cartridge wouldn't chamber in a used 30-06 I bought. The smith found the chamber was being twisted by a warped stock. Sounds crazy, a new stock fixed it.

I know it's unrelated to your problem, just an example.

I too had a Timney problem with a Vanguard. I purchased one for my Sub-MOA model and took it to a gunsmith to install. It wouldn't fit, so I returned it for a replacement. I have the new one but haven't tried it yet. I hope this one works.

Thanks guys, I'm having a gunsmith look at it and he's fairly confident he can fix it. He said that he's dealt with this before. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
