Vari-X II compared to current Leupold scopes?

How does the Vari-X II compare to the current Leupold line of scopes in regards to clarity? Does it compare to the VX-II or VX-I? I have heard that the new VX-II is basically the old Vari-X III, but I am not sure if that is true. If that is true, I would assume the Vari-X II would compare roughly with the VX-I. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Let me hear your wisdom on this matter. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif Thanks.

i'm to lazy to look right now..it's seem's i remember reading about this in the Q&A section on leupold's web site..might be worth a look.

Differences between the Vari-XII and the VX-I and the VX-II
The Vari-X II line was retired at the end of 2001. Leupold replaced this line of products with two different lines, the VX-I and the VX-II. The VX-I has a Silent Friction adjustment in 1/4" inch hash marks on the adjustment dial. All the internal lenses have a single coating of magnesium floride. The eyepiece and objective external lenses have a standard multicoat lens coating, providing approximately 86% of the available light back to the shooters eye. It is offered in Gloss finish or Matte finish, Duplex Reticle or Wide Duplex and in 2-7x, 3-9x and 4-12x. They have the Leupold Lifetime Warranty. The VX-II line of scopes provide 1/4 MOA audible click adjustments and Multicoat 4 lens coating on all the lens surfaces which provide 92% of the available light back to the shooters eye. The line is offered in Gloss, Matte and some models in Silver finish. The custom shop modifications are also available. The VX-II scopes have the Leupold Lifetime warranty.

What was the difference between Vari-X II and Vari- X III? All Vari-X III models had Multicoat 4 lens coating for enhanced light transmission (about 8 to 10% more than Vari-X II, which had lenses fully coated with magnesium fluoride). All Vari-X III models featured 1\4 minute of angle clicks in the windage and elevation adjustments. The Vari-X II models all used a reliable friction type adjustment. A range estimating feature was on selected models of the Vari-X III 1.75-6x32mm, 2.5-8x36mm, 3.5-10 and 4.5-14 (both 40mm and 50 mm) scopes. The Vari-X II scope, while being an older design, was superbly engineered and set the scope industry standard for ruggedness, reliability, and quality in rifle scopes. Both Vari-X II and III models shared the same high mechanical and optical performance standards, and the same close tolerances in manufacturing for precise operation. Both models were tested identically to meet the same rigid mechanical and optical specifications.{edit link didn't work}

Is VX-I tested to the same level as VX-II and Vari-X III?
The VX-I scopes offer the same ruggedness and reliability as all Leupold scopes.
