I am going to be getting a new scope for my bolt 223. I was looking at getting Leupold VX-II series but then a friend of mine offered his Vari-X III. They both are nice scopes. Do yall have any opinions on which series over the other? Thanks -Drew

I have one of each. Both are great but the III is the better of the two if you can afford it.I would suggest looking at the VX-R series as well.

Vari X III is a very good scope. Top of the Leupold line at that time. The VXII is supposed to be the equivalent. The VXIII has even better coatings.

I would buy the one that was the easiest to adjust.

kelbro has the correct answer. I spoke to a Leupold rep when the VX line came out. In effect
the VXI = the Vari-XII
the VXII= the Vari-XIII
as far as the lens coatings etc...

I would take a VXII over a Vari-XIII just because it is newer/made more recently. But both are fine scopes.

I bought my first Leupold VariX-III in 1983. She's still one of my sharpest, clearest and best performing scopes even after that many years of service. The only ones that compete seriously with her are my newer scopes that cost $1,000+.

i have 3 VX-II on my rifles. main reason i went for VX-II was price and what i could afford. after i bought my first one, i felt confidence using it so i bought two more. i have other scopes and my VX-II are by far my favorites. I had heard where they are trying to phase out VX-II to make room to introduce Redfield line in that equivalent series.

Thanks for all the help guys. I actually ended up not getting either of the ones I listed, I got the VX-III series. It was not very much more to step up to that. That will be interesting about the Redfield line equivalent to the VX-II and to see how well it sells.

Good choice. My eyes aren't good enough any more to tell the difference between the II and the III. Come to think of it, my ears aren't what they once were either
