Velocity and barrel length in 22 CF

Just wondering if there is a set rule on how much velocity loss you will get by running a short barrel on your gun. For instance same load in .223 with a 26" barrel, then shot with a 21" barrel. Mostly concerned with .223 and 22-250.

Thanks, Sleddogg

Not a set rule, no. But for the cartridges and barrel lengths you are talking about, you'll lose about 40 fps per inch. Maybe a little more, maybe a little less.

I have to agree with DAA. I use several different length barrels for .223. 16 1/2" to 24" and notice around 40-50 fps change for each inch when running them through the chrony.

I just ran across some figures for the 308 shooting the 155 Palma bullet.

There is a 150fps difference between a 26" and a 34" barrel. That would seem to indicate that there are diminishing returns with real long barrels.

I have a .22-250 with a 26" SS barrel, and the difference comes out to about 50ft per inch of
barrel difference. I think that's a rather standard figure. Friends who shoot larger calibers report the difference is about the same. You'd need a chronograph to get the actual figures, but these will do nicely. Best wishes.
