VLD Varmint Bullet Campaign

I need your help on a campaign for a new line of Berger VLD bullets.

I approached Berger via e-mail requesting an addition to their VLD bullet line-up specifically for varmint hunters. The Bergers are consistently very accurate bullets. I don't think I've ever loaded them in any form that didn't shoot well in my rifles. That being said, I shoot 105 gr VLD's in my .243AI because of the accuracy and high BC but they don't open up fast enough for long range varmints. The Hunting VLD's are slightly faster opening than the Match VLD's but they still don't expand fast enough for quick kills at long range. I'm encouraging them to manufacture a Varmint VLD that would perform terminally more like an A-max. (I'd just use the A-max but my rifle decided it didn't like them.

If you would be interested in trying or using a "Varmint VLD", contact Berger and we'll see if they may consider marketing it. The e-mail address is brent.hanson@bergerbullets.com. Thanks.

I can get behind that. I would also like to see something in a 6mm designed for 6x45 speeds for a little tougher critters like Hogs and such around 70ish grains.

I have never understood why the other companies didn't copy Hornady's theme and come out with polymer tips stuck in the tip of their VLD's. All they would have to do is pick one weight in each caliber (including 204). Look what Hornady did with the 6.5 123 A-Max, and it's supposed to be a successful venture from what i've heard. All they gotta' do is see how many companies are selling aftermarket fast-twist barrels. It's gotta' be a bunch.

The A-max's have worked the best of all for me for the best compromise between external and terminal ballistics at long range, although there are some bullets like the 115 Nosler 25 and 87 V-max 24 that are also very good. And now the 53 gr. V-Max is looking a bit better than anything else for std. twist 22 cal. barrels.

If u rifle guys think it's tough to find a good long range varmint-style bullet u oughtta' try finding one that works out of a specialty pistol.

IMO, Hornady leads the pack regarding VLD varmint bullets.

I've got a box of the new 87 VLD 6mm Berger Hunting bullets for my 243 if it ever comes back from re-barrel. I'm curious how it will perform on chucks out to about 600yds. The 70NBT's have been awesome for me, but they drift too bad in wind. I have some 87 V-max to try also, but those VLD's just look sexy sitting on top of my Lapua brass. I worry about over penetration with the Bergers. I rarely get exits with the NBT's as close as 50yds with my 243.

Tim, have you tried any of the 87VLD's yet? I'm guessing your running around 8" twist, but they may be worth trying.

Thanks for the help guys. Walt Berger e-mailed me back and said he new they had a hole in their line but would be a ways out on the project. Maybe with enough interest they'll speed it up.

ARCory: I haven't tried the 87's. All things being equal, they should open up a little better than the 105's but my guess is that they are still going to be a little tougher than you would like for groundhogs. If they weren't, they'd probably be a poor bullet for big game which is what they were designed for. I bet they will shoot though! Yeah, we run eight twists.
