Vortex Crossfire 6-24x50 subtensions question

I recently purchased with of these scopes questions for my CZ 527 varmint in .204 and 1 for my Savage Trophy Predator in 22-250. I noticed on the scope that 18 is in red and circled so I checked out the manual to see why. It mentions that the scope needs to be set at 18 for the subtension to be correct. Does this mean that the BDC chart included with the scope instructions won't be accurate or doesomething it mean the marks given the Vortex LBRC software won't be accurate?

Also if I use the Strelok app will it work at 24x?

Thanks

You have to be set to 18 power for the subtensions to be accurate, yes. You will still need to confirm your ammo drop in relation to the subtensions.

Does your scope have two numbers on the power ring? One of my Vortex scopes does. The number is the reticle multiplier so if I am not on the exact power for the subtension to be correct I can just multiply the drop by the multiplier and it is accurate.

I only have the magnification power on the ring.

Can you explain the sub-tension a little better than the manual does? What is the advantage of the additional magnification on the scope if you can't use it?

I was hoping to be able to ineutral my load information into the Strelok Pro app and figure out where to hold for the shot, I really don't care about being able to use the BDC chart included with the manuals.

Sub tensions are in the books. It is the distance between point A and point B. So if it is stated as a 4 MOA reticle, then the center (point A) to the first mark (point B) is that 4 MOA.

In your case with the Dead-Hold BDC, from the center to the first drop mark is 1.5 MOA down from the center...but this is only true at the prescribed 18X.

On another note, what part of NW PA are you? I am from the Crawford/Erie county line.

You can use the marks at any magnification, but it is only calibrated at the one setting. You have to know what each setting is at other magnification.

Sub-tensions are simply a measurement. Your subtensions are defined in the link I posted above.

With math. You would have to figure that all out and keep it written down. 9X will be double your sub-tension.

OR...sight in at 100. Then shoot at all power settings, using a hash mark as the aiming point, on the center. Then measure how far the POI changes.

This is exactly why FFP scopes are suggested for graduated reticles. They are the same at all mag settings.

As for the software, you use the slider for different mag settings. Find your load, then print out some cards for each mag setting if you want to know where the BDC will drop in.

Cool deal. My childhood best friend teaches biology at Clarion HS. I live north of Tittusville and south of Union City.
