Vortex Diamondback HP 3X12X42

I've been lurking on PM for quite a while but just recently officially joined.

Does anybody have any experience with the Diamondback HP line? I've heard great things from a few buddies and the reviews that I have read. I just ordered one and should hopefully have it by middle of next week. Just wondered what you all thought.

Please review it when you get it as it sounds like a pretty decent power range for hunting.

I've owned 3 Vortex scopes a Viper, Viper HS LR and a Viper PST. To be honest I'm not impressed in the least with the glass in Vortex scopes.

The 1st 2 Vipers were sold shortly after buying them and the 3rd (PST) is about to go down the road also.

may i ask what your baseline for comparison on the vortex scopes is?

For the price point the HP's are great from Vortex..I have owned everything from the PST line,to the Razor line to now all NF offerings.
I purchased both the 3-12 and 4-16 HP to give them a try and ended up keeping the 3-12 for my wife's rig. The eye relief on the 4-16 was a bit short for my liking but for both scopes being sub $500 range they are a great bang for the buck.
That being said I'm not a fan of the PST line as I have had issues with 2 PST's and decided to give up on that. The razor offerings from vortex are awesome but at the price point, I decided to stick with all NF.
It's all about budget, but overall I'm happy with the 3-12 HP

Thank you all. I appreciate all of your thoughts and opinions. It just came in the mail yesterday and it looked great out of the box. Now just waiting for the custom barrel that was supposed to be done 2 weeks ago. I'll give it a review after it's mounted and sighted in.

keep us updated when you get the new barrel, I know I would like to here your take on your Vortex.
Thanks

My wife had our baby girl a month early, Sunday night. Haven't had much time to do anything and still waiting for the barrel. Might make a phone call about it tomorrow if I can stay awake long enough.

Congrats on the new arrival! Hope all is going well.

i got the 2x8 hp because it was on sale for $100 off regular price. that was still the most money i have ever spent on a scope. i don't have a lot of experience with scopes. i have always used old handy down leupold, old and new redfield. nikon buckmaster. bushnell trophy something another i paid 100 for new, worst scope, would not stay on zero. and tasco. so of those it is an awesome scope for me. reading up on as many scopes in my price range i could find and it being 100 off original price, i felt it was the best bang for my buck. i would love to give a modern day leupold a try but i have no complaints with that diamondback hp so far. i had a youth model 7 i put a bell and carlson stock on and bedded it, bedded tally one piece rings on as well, lapped them and got a scope mounting kit and mounted it. zero'd at 200 i started out with about a 5" group. found hornady american whitetale and shrunk it to 3" then discovered if i could consistently keep my head in the same position every time to fire (need a good cheek rest now for my gun so i can rest my cheek somewhere for consistency) my group shrunk to an inch. but i noticed the shorter eye relief of that scope helps me to hold more consistent and i like that. i have to hold my head up off my stock. scope rings are as low as they can go before my bolt comes in contact with my scope. but at 8 power it pretty much covers the orange 1" bullseye but i can see through the glass well enough to see just a little outside edge of orange so i know im holding zero.

I own the Vortex Diamondback 3x12-42. I put it on a CZ 527 Varmint chambered in .17 Hornet. This is the second Vortex scope I've owned. The glass is clear, crisp and clean. The crosshairs stay solid and full at all times looking down the scope. It comes with a sunshade which is a nice extra. I also love the side focus/parallax adjustment. I have nothing bad to say about this scope and give it five out of five stars.

Basically the same situation that I was in. This was my most expensive scope purchase up to this point. While I'd love a night force it's just out of my price range. Still waiting for the barrel so I can get it mounted though. Looking forward to throwing some lead down range with it.

Thanks for the review Bad Dawg. Hoping I like mine as much as you do yours!

Thanks AYote!! Glad to hear you've got no complaints.

I've got a Diamondback HP in 3-12 and 4-16. The 4-16 is on a Remington 700 in .270 Win. It's held zero for 3 hunting seasons now. The 3-12 I had on a .223 but swapped it out for a Zeiss, and the Vortex is moving to my 6.8 AR. It also held zero just fine. Both have the BDC reticle, track well, focus well, and do the tasks they were intended to do. The 4-16 seems to be just a tad clearer though. I think they are nice scopes for the price, they met my needs and budget at the time and I haven't had any issues to date.
