Vortex Spitfire 3x

My son purchased an AR platform rifle last night and is thinking about the Vortex Spitfire 3x. He has a price point of $288.00 delivered.

I know there are tons of scopes out there, that are higher priced, but he's 24, live out of the house, works fulltime and goes to college. So money is tight.

A buddy of mine had a Vortex 4x12 on a 6.5 CM, said it was a pretty good scope for $200 bucks.

The reviews on this scope are really good, but I hoping some of the members here may have some first hand experience with it.

Any input would be great.

It is hard to beat a Leupold VX-2 3-9X for an all around rifle scope under $300. I'd rather have that for the variability over the 3X. JMO...but If fixed it would be a 1X or 6X for me.

Personally for calling coyotes I look at 1-4x20mm or 1,5-6x40mm scopes with heavy duplex or German # 4 w/Ill. dots. 60-90' FOV for fast close in work and more X's for longer range stuff.

My AR(20 Practicle) wears an Alpen Optics 1.5-6x40mm German #4 with Ill dot.

I have the spitfire on a .22 lever action. It works for what it is but I prefer a low power variable.

For the same money, I would recommend a Burris Tac30 1-4. It does everything that the Spitfire does, but better. He can shoot both eyes open on 1x with very little distortion (can't do that with spitfire) plus he gets more magnification on the 4x range. It has an etched, illuminated reticle similar to the spitfire but has an auto off feature that the spitfire doesnt.

Don't quote me on this, but the FOV is better too.

I've used the Leupold VXR and VX6 LPVs as well as the Vortex PST 1-4 and prefer the Burris.

It is heavier, but worth the trade. For what it's worth, there seems to be a trend in the LEO and "tactical" world away from the red dots towards the LPV optics for general purpose rifles. The RDS definitely have their place but the advent of the true (or close to) 1x LPVs have opened up a new realm.
