Vortex VIP Warranty/Scope mounting question?

I had a four year old Vortex Diamondback 4-12x40 mounted on a .243 that suddenly lost the ability to maintain its point of impact and would not adjust properly and then would wander around the target. I sent it in to Vortex and one week later I had a new scope on my doorstep! They do stand by their products and honor their warranty! But the concern I do have is I didn't do anything out of the normal with my scope when it failed. I hunt off my atv and have it in a kolpin gun boot between sets and that's the most bumping the scope has ever endured. They said in the repair write up that there was damage to the tube from over tightening of the rings and the reticle was canted with debris in the scope. The thing I don't understand is that there were no ring marks or visible dents from the rings whatsoever on my old scope when I sent it in. Is it possible to damage the tube by over tightening the rings without causing any external damage to the scope? Thanks and happy trails.

Quote:Is it possible to damage the tube by over tightening the rings without causing any external damage to the scope?.....Yes...That is one of the reasons I use Burris Signature rings with the polyvinyl inserts...Otherwise you need to take the time to check the alignment of the rings and lap as needed...

I have ridden in a couple of ATVs (side by side) that jarred my teeth pretty good on the back trails and even though the rifle/scope was in a hard side gun case, very few fit that tight, I can see where the reticle could get damaged if the whole outfit was torques just right...

Thanks! That's good information to know. I've had other scopes much longer that have never had an issue under the same circumstances so it must have been my fault on the mounting. My atv is a can am outlander that has pretty good suspension and most desert trails I take aren't too bad. Maybe I'll follow my brothers trick of stuffing an extra shirt in the gun boot to reduce any bouncing that may occur. I'm not super impressed by the diamdback's optical quality but due to the customer service, even with my screwup, I'll try out some of their higher end glass in the future. I'll heed your advice on the Burris signature rings and the rest of your input. I've had great luck with my Burris scopes and think they are great for what you pay. Thanks Old Turtle and happy trails.

I think the Diamondback has good opticl quality. I think it is better than the Viper PA and definitely better than other scopes in its class.

Everyone's eyes are different. I see better through a Minox ZV 3 and Burris Fullfield II than I do a Diamondback. Have a friend who is just the opposite.

That's how it was for me, I think it's subjective to a point. I was shooting at the end of legal shooting light and when I looked through another rifle that I have that's topped with a Burris Fullfield II 3-9x40 and my buddy's rifle with an older Nikon Buckmasters 3-9x40 they were both quite a bit brighter to me and clearer than the diamondback. I do have to say the customer service from Vortex impressed me and I'd love to have the 11-33x Razor HD spotter. Another buddy has that spotter and it's amazing for the size. That's probably my next glass purchase. Does the Diamondback HP have the Viper glass or does it have better coatings than the regular Diamondback? I wonder if it had an adjustable parallax if the image would be better when cranked up to 12x? Any company that stands behind their products like that get my respect.
