VTR .308 Range Report

Well I picked up my VTR yesterday and the weather was nice today so I went out to break in the barrel and see if I could put together a pattern. It shot pretty well and as you can tell by the pictures as I got more rounds through the new barrel the groups started to tighten up. I have high hopes for this rifle, with a little work and some load development I think it will be a great shooter. Before I went to the range I did loosen the trigger on it to 2.5lbs. It broke clean and there was no creep or over-travel.

Here are a few pics:

I mounted a Leupold VXII 6X18X40 AO scope on it. I think it will do the trick /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I used some MagTech bulk 168gr loads to break in the barrel, they didn't seem to group at all out of my rifle. After I shot and cleaned the bore ten times I switched to the factory Hornady 168gr Match HPBT loads and had better results. I would also like to mention that I was shooting off of a bench that is about knee high. The range I usually shoot at is closed for some reason so I had to go to the other one. The bench is solid, but it makes shooting uncomfortable and hard to be consistant as far as shooting positions go.

Here is a picture of my first five shot group.

Here is my second five shot group. Notice the size of the group got smaller with more rounds through the barrel. I shot the first three rounds right on top of one another and they measure .312, but I just had to put the other two on paper to make it a five shot group. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

All in all it was a good day at the range. I will be doing some work to the stock (glass and pillar bedding) and I think if I can do my part when I have worked up a good load she will be a true .5 MOA long gun!

On a side note, the recoil I would have to rate as about a .22-250. When shooting off hand the gas pushed the barrel to the right slightly but I would have to say that the break did a good job.

Very nice, honest 5 shot groups suck sometimes. I hate when I have a super tight group going and then fire just 1 more shot. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

well, what the heck I tryed calling you! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif looks good, get a new stock and we'll bed some rifle. (my stock is about done should be wrapped up by thurs?)

See any gophers out?

Why would change the stock on a rifle shooting groups like the VTR does?I had the last 3 of a 5 shot group cloverleaf with my VTR last Sun.,very pretty.I have seen my groups getting tighter with break in as well.

Nonya-I spoke without reason the other day, I take everything back I've said about the vtr stock (sps). BT and I went out shooting today and I lobbed a few rounds down range with his new VTR, what a dream!

Nice and light, shot very well; BT shot a nice sub 1", three shot triangle, and I placed a forth shot just off one of corner.

As he mentioned before, the brake/muzzle ports, do have a strange recoil motion in off-hand firing but nothing that effects anything.

I'll be looking for one in 22-250 now.

Thanks for the report! I have been wanting one in 308 and have my eye on one, just can't seem to figure out what I can sell to buy it.That is one cool looking rifle! It's been interesting at the talk on this site about the VTR.Seems guys hate it or love it and some people want to buy it and change the stock. I would like to know if the muzzle blast is severe without ear plugs,I dont usually use them hunting.

I think REM released some more 308s as SW has a few on the shelf again.Ill probably end up with another one in .223 or .204 ,i love the lil rifle.

Firecapt: It is loud, but really how many shots are you going to take while hunting? I wouldn't say that it was any louder than my .270, but I will say that it is not as loud as some of these 16" ARs some people shoot. I know that every shot hurts your hearing...but I don't think you'll have any problems with the blast.

"but I don't think you'll have any problems with the blast."

And after a few shots you won't hear the blast very much at all. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

The point I was trying to make is that there are plenty of guns that are louder than this one. Anyone who has been shooting for any amount of time knows the importance of hearing protection, and I believe that most of us here are perfectly capable of making up our own minds on whether or not to wear protection.

Thanks for the report.I understand what you mean without a problem, just what I wanted.I have 3 ARs with 16" barrels and they are not a problem hunting. I bought a 444 Marlin outfitter with the short barrel and ported.I could not stand the muzzle blast even hunting. The rifle would not cycle the rounds and I sent it back to Marlin. It was worse when I got it back and I got a refund from the store. That is why I was askig about the brake.
