im looking to hop up my walther p22 alittle bit.. ive had 2 of them for the past 3-4years(ones the wife's, ones mine) anyway, im trying to find one of the factory laser sights that walther made for them. can any of you guys help me track one down.. do you know of a shop or website that has them instock for right at 100 bucks.. natchez has them listed at 87bucks and ive found them for right at 100 but there all out of stock right now.. all the shops that do have them want between 130-150bucks for them. im not paying that when i know i can get them for 100, if you know what i mean.
also, im debating a suppressor. i read where there are no laws banning these for individuals, is this true? can i just call up and order one and have them deliver it to my ffl dealer. are there any papers or other loops i have to jump through in order to purchase one?

any help would be greatly appreciated... thanks, shawn.

First, make sure they are allowed in your state... Missouri has a statewide ban on them, for any purpose other than a law enforcement agency.

Second, contact BATF as there is a special tax stamp you have to purchase ($200, I think) for each and every one that you posses and that includes the background check on you and anyone in the family that may ever have it in their possession. Expect a potential visit from their personnel to make sure that only you have it in your possession...

They can get pretty touchy on the fine print...

To get the suppressor, you will need to apply to the BATFE and pay $200 for the tax stamp. It must be handled through a dealer that can handle class three products (suppressors and machine guns)... a regular FFL cannot do it for you.

The first background check takes four to six months. Additional suppressors (requiring $200 each) move through the paperwork much faster.

You should have a safe to keep in it - you do NOT ever want to be in the position of having to tell BATFE that someone broke into your house and stole your suppressor!!! VERY BADD!

Contact the BATFE about whether it is legal to own in your state (or town)... they will know your state's laws better than your own police... and ask them to send you the forms and requirements... they are pretty friendly about it.

You will also have to get your local police chief to sign off on the paperwork, that it is OK with him/her that you own a suppressor. If they won't sign the papers, it is still possible to get one, but it gets real difficult at that point.

As you can tell - it's a bit of a PITA.

Much of the info you have been given is flawed in some form. I have had NFA (national firearms act) items for many years and this is the process you will have to follow. First - suppressors ARE legal in Ohio. You need a class 3 dealer in your state where you will make your suppressor selection and purchase. The dealer will provide you two copies of an ATF form 4 with the make, model and serial number of your new suppressor along with his transfer information and your personal information. Take these to the chief law enforcement officer in the jurisdiction where you live for his signature (which is not for his permission, but merely to certify there are no local laws prohibiting ownership), have two fingerprint cards completed and make two 2 x 2 pictures for the form 4's and mail to ATF with a check for $200. Transfers are now running about 8 weeks after your check is cashed. Additionally, it does not matter how many times you have been approved for a NFA item, you start at the bottom of the pile for each transfer. Only dealers get quick approvals. Your assigned examiner is based on the first letter of your dealer's name and there are some quick and some slow examiners. (bottom level govt workers) When your form 4 is approved, it is sent to your dealer to complete the transfer and he will call you to come get your new toy! Of course, proper safekeeping and no loaning to others without your presence is required. Your dealer will fill you in with those details. It is worth the hassle and lots of fun.

Why bother with a suppressor on a 22?

Lots of reasons! Shoot without ear protection, wont bother neighbors, more fun for the kids and women folk, some states allow hunting with suppressors - how many reasons do you need? Try it and you WILL like it.

i just called and got the jist of it on what i had to do to get it and you guys are basically right.. the 200.00 tax is a pita is you ask me.. i guess thats just a deterant for some. i appreciate the help for sure, this is going to be a long process i guess, no need to get in a hurry huh..

i talked to the guys at tactical innovations.. real helpful guy.. he told me to get the suppressor that would be adaptable for the .223 and 5.56 as well as my walther that way i could use it that way as well..
im not sure if it is legal to hunt in ohio with a suppressor, i will have to check on that issue but it would be a very nice feature for when im hunting close to homes where i dont feel comfortable hunting late at night and take a chance on waking them up so there are pluses to owning one.
im still going to call batf and ask them some questions on ownership before i proceed with this.. my father and i both are going to go thru the process so we'll see how it goes..
thanks again for the help..

and as far as the laser lights.. those bugars are hard to come by right now... natchez has been on backorder since february and 4 of the other shops i have called are out as well.. going to be another waiting game i guess.

I have a TAC 16 for a 223 / 5.56 and you definitely do not want to put that heavy thing on a Walther P22. Tactical Innovations makes some nice lightweight suppressors for a pistol as do other manufacturers.

I shot about a hundred rnds through a friends surpressed P22 the other day and it was not that heavy with the surpressor he had (lighter than a beretta 92). It was made by a company out of Sumter, SC that I can't remember the name of but will find out if you want.

With sub-sonics all you could hear was the action cycling. Very cool.. little 22 if you ask me. I was told that the $200 tax stamp for class III has been $200 since the 1930's when it was implemented and was a way to detour ownership of full-auto tommy guns and such back then. 200 bucks would have been a lot of loot back then!

Another tip with a suppressor on a .22 is be sure you get one that you can take apart for cleaning. The 22LR is very dirty and will lead up the innards quick.
