Walther P99

Any Walther P99 owners out there?

I had the LGS order a Magnum Research MR9 Eagle. I new that it used a Walther P99 frame, and a slightly heavier US made barrel and slide. The pistol came with a manual for the Eagle, CZ75 clone, so I started searching the Internet, to figure out how the thing works.

I soon realized that I has a P99AS (Anti-Stress) model, not the Fast Action (Quick Action), that was advertised. This has to be one of the safest pistols actions, I've ever seen. Simple, safe, with a great trigger action. I was never a big fan of polymer, but this may be the best handgun I've ever owned. For concealed carry, I have a Kahr CW9 and S&W 637. But I feel much better carrying the MR9/P99, even though it's a little bigger and heavier.

I'm now thinking of getting another P99, P99c or PPQ. Can anyone tell me, how close a P99c feels, compared to a S&W M&P9c? Any advice?

I own the original walther german made p99 in 40sw. My wife owns a p99c also in 40sw.

I regulary carry my p99, just picked up a custom pancake holster for it, and love it. It doesn't print too bad at all being fullsize.

This has always been one of my most favorite handguns that I own and or have shot. It is reliable, light, accurate, easy to brake down and clean. I did upgrade to the night sights when I started to carry. But liked the original sights just fine.

I can't say enough positive things about these guns.

I know oldturtle on here has one too, and has positive things to say about it too, If I remember right he carries his from time to time too.

I have pretty big hands, and don't love the p99c, with the find extension on the mag it is ok, and i can shoot pretty good with it, but am glad I found a holster to work with my full size.

I'm an old guy, used to steel guns and leather holsters. The MR9/P99 feels big, in my belt slide holster, compared to my carry guns. But, my carry guns would be considered a BUG to others. Here in Florida, I rarely wear more than a cotton shirt and dockers. I would like to get a shoulder holster, or a pancake holster that would work for cross draw, while driving. I'll have to wear a jacket or over sized shirt.

All other guns now seem to lack features, compared to the P99. I like the de-cocker, loaded chamber indicator, double strike capability, and great trigger action and options. I also like the safety features that it doesn't have.

A full sized Walther P99 would be about 2 oz. lighter. Or I could go for the P99c. My fingers are long, but thin. I can get all of my fingers on the Kahr CW9 grip.

Thanks.

I carry my P99 .40 (original Walther) in a Milt Sparks Versa-Max2 holster (IWB) and it's not very noticeable unless I'm just wearing a plain T shirt over it..Not the best for sitting in a vehicle, but it's not that much problem to remove and carry under my leg if I think a neighborhood has gone down hill...

I've been considering having a replacement barrel made for it to allow me to utilize the .357 Sig cartridge...But not sure if it's worth it or not due to the cost of the ammo and I already have over 1,000 rounds of .40 set aside..Plus, I'd have to go through the process of finding the proper strength recoil spring for the .357 Sig ammo..

Like Sebastian Slim,,,I like all the features the pistol offers over others on the market...

When I drive with mine, I carry it on my 4/5 o'clock and find it very comfortable still.

Turtle, have u found a place to replace the 40sw barrel? I have been looking and so far haven't found anything? Mine is almost all used up

If you are just wanting to replace the stock barrel, you might contact "Earl's Repair Service" (http://www.carlwalther.com/p99.htm)...for a custom made barrel, you might want to contact Bar-Sto, KKM, and some of the others, but be prepared to spend a 'little' more..Lone Wolf, I think, only deals with Glock barrels..

Thanks, I have talked to carlwalther before, they are little on the expensive side, but might have to go that rout. $300 for a barrel, when I spent $400 on the gun originally seems a little steep. But if that is what it takes to keep it going....

Sorry sebastian, didn't mean to jack your thread.

The hard part about the p99 is that not that many people have them. IT isn't the most popular handgun. So info. holster, parts can be more difficult to find compared to a glock, or something else. For me, it is well worth it, because of what it is. Hope you got some answers that you were looking for.

No Problem. I'm just trying to learn what I can.

I think I'm going to try to get my hands on a P99c, and maybe PK380. I've always been a Walther and CZ75 guy. The CZ's are great at the range, but a little too big and heavy for carry.

Sebastion Slim,,The only problem I would have with the P99c is the shorter grip...Many years ago, I lost half of my middle finger on my 'strong' hand and have to rely on my ring and little finger for gripping power in larger caliber handguns...

I recently picked up one of the Diamond Back 9mms (really a Glock clone) and it's about as short as I can handle...My little Kel-Tec .32 doesn't produce enough recoil to be a problem with just one and a half finger grip, but moving up to a 9mm with Hornady 95gr rounds moving at 1480 fps could be a problem without that extra length..

One of the problems I've found over the years with shorter barrels and the shorter sight distance is that the accuracy factor becomes more critical as the distance increases, especially when you throw a really fast second and third shot time factor into the mix...

I used to have a Colt Defender (3" barrel) in .45acp and finally sold it just for that reason..My IDPA scores really suffered with it..So I'm hesitant to promote the shorter barrels for anyone without at least mentioning the problem..

I can shoot pretty well with the CW9, with a 3.5" barrel. But, I do get more flyer's. I think that it's because of the short trigger reach. My finger really wraps around the trigger. The PK380 is the right size, but the wrong caliber. A S&W M&P9c or Ruger SR9c might work for me. I just feel like the P99 is a safer, with it's decocker and trigger options.
