several questions before i start to build new rifle

1. will a 1-9 or 1-10 twist shoot the 50 grn as well as a 63 grain
2. can i get a 1-9 or 1-10 twist 22-250 barrel?
3. how long should the barrel be?
4. how thick?
please pm me with any help
thanks

1:9 or 1:10 should work fine for those bullet weights. A fast twist 22-250 is 1:8 IIRC. I think to answer the question better you need to tell us what you are going for? Long range accuracy rifle, calling rifle, etc? Barrel length and contour are answered by purpose.

I have read that the faster the TR, the faster the bbl will burn out on a 22-250. Most 22-250 are a 1:12 or 1:14 TR. Mine is a 1:14, 26" long hvy bbl. I can shoot the 60gr. Vmax but nothing heavier. +1 on wut dogtired said. Depends on why your building it.

I have a custom 22-250 completed 2 years ago. I talked fairly in depth with the gun maker about twist rates. I was mostly thinking about going with a faster twist than the common 1/14". He asked about bullet weights I planned to shoot & use for the gun. My plan was mostly 50 grain,55 at the most, for prairie dogging. He was fairly firm in suggesting I stick with the 1-14 twist, not that I couldn't get whatever I wanted. I had no plans to go 60 grains and higher. It's worked for me, I went with the 1-14. I also went with 24" length.

I picked a medium contour Shilen barrel. The gun has some heft to it but not overly heavy. Since it has a nice bird's eye maple stock I won't be carrying it in the rain/snow for predator hunting anyway. It's a fair weather dogging or range gun.

Of course things can vary some if you planned to shoot all copper bullets or some of the newer non-lead offerings. They can be long for the weight compared to lead.

If you want to shoot the 63g Sierra Semi point, the 1-14 twist will stabalize them just fine.

Also, if you are building a custom gun, the 22/250 AI is a WHALE of a yote rifle!

A 24" #4 is a perfect walk about rifle that you may need on longer shots, and will give you a rigid barrel for super accuracy and speed.

If you wanted to go a little faster twist, then the 1-12 will handle the 60g Nosler partitions,60g Hornady V max, and the mighty 60g Berger perfectly.

Ackleyman, my 1:14 won't even stabilize any 55 grain I've put through
it. Barrels are just different. 52's and 53's are the limit for me. A 1:12 is
minimum for what he wants to do.
