I'd rather waffle a housecat than a Fox anyway...here are my thoughts on the subject, I just wanted to hear some other ideas. I would guess that most of the time a Foxes main food supply is field mice{various species}, which can be mighty hard to find in the dead of winter. Maybe they hibernate when it gets cold or the harsh weather kills off the weak ones. Mice are easier for a fox to catch than rabbits and I'm sure in the wild there are more mice. Foxes will eat anything they can find thats edible and I'am gonna guess again and say they probably have alot of choices this time of the year. When it gets cold a fox is not only burning more energy but unable to get hardly any of the food thats available now so a sqealing rabbit is "something to run for." What could make it even worse is that mice are starting to actively gather food so they are moving alot and are everywhere. If what I am guessing is true it may be hard to call up a well fed fox this early in the season!!!!! I tried several times to go out and call up a fox last spring {after the weather broke and it was warming up} but was unsucessful, not a single fox came to the call. It's not like I cant do it because we killed over 50 last year. I also did'nt kill them all out of the area I was calling in because I heard several grays barking there at different times. This is what prompted me to try calling{just for fun.} One would think that if warm weather calling works for other predators it would work on foxes too????? Anyone else got any ideas/experiences????? Thanks for the replys, good luck.
