was it a dog or coyote?

Saturday I went out with the FX3 to give it a trial test and set up on a power line. I started out with a female invataion howl and immediately a dog(?) started barking almost howling and began closing the gap but got so close and headed parralell with the power line and out of hearing. I dismissed it as a stray dog but could it been a yote? I dont have a heap of experience calling. I immediately followed up with yote pup distress and whatever it was be dog or yote didnt show itself to confirm either way. Any suggestions fellas?

The sound of the bark but then again I have heard a yote howls but not a bark. Do they sound like a regular dog when they bark? It was a kind of high pitched excited bark like a dog chasing a deer. What ya think?

Sounds like a coyote that busted you they will bark up a storm when they know whats up gereraly a lot of barking and a few high pitched howles.

Coyotes pretty much sound like a regular dog when they bark. It's not a "woof" but a bark. Sounds like you were close! Keep it up!

Well I feel like I did accomplish something any way. That would be two confirmed(almost)in two years of calling yotes to show up at my calling set up and Kudos to the FX3 on an excellent virgin run. OK so I didnt see Wiley this time but at least I am getting a response. It was a bit breezy and I am sure that he/she smelled me. Now I will know what they sound like when alarmed. Ignorance is bliss.

I'm guessing you stirred up a coyote. I went up the road last fall at night to try out a new call. I got a "yip...yip" and nothing after that. It sounded like a small dog, but I think it was a coyote busting me. Then recently I called in a domestic dog and it charged right in. I think if it was dog it would have showed up at the call. Your coyote slipped away. Getting a response is 90% of the fun anyway. Don't you just want to get him all that much more now that he tricked you? That's what keeps me going back: the close ones.PC

This forum is top notch I have been on other forums about hunting and gotten grief about everything. I am learning something from you fellas everytime I post and thanks again for responding. I feel better about the situation and will be that much more confident on my next calling series.

I think Pine Cone hit it on the head. 99.9 percent of the time you get busted by a domestic dog, they come right in to you. Coyotes just give you the "I know what you are doing" bark howl and run off! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif I called in a black lab a few years ago I don't know who scared who first! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Probably what they said, it figured something was not right or it knew what was happening. I have had them bark at me or to others while I approach them in a trap. Sometimes they sound a lot like a dog.T.20

I agree with the rest of the fellas, I bet you got coyote busted. Stick with it and watch that wind direction, if you suspect that the coyote will be coming out of an area that is down wind, try to change stand locations to get that down wind area to be pretty open, that way if they want to smell the critter making the distress then they are gonna have to pay for it.

Nice job, sounds like you are VERY close to sealing the deal, Congrats!

Oh and by the way, Welcome to Predator Masters, these guys are packed fun of awesome knowledge.

Later,

Scott
