Got this emailed to me from NRA. Hope we can make a difference if we all start calling!

Pro-Hunting Bill Heads to Governor's Desk in Washington!

Please Contact the Governor Today!

Important pro-hunting legislation, House Bill 2438, has passed the State Legislature and is on its way to the desk of Governor Chris Gregoire (D) for her consideration.

HB2438 would extend a pilot program that would permit certain counties to allow the pursuit and taking of cougars with the aid of dogs. It would also permit counties that are not part of the pilot program and which are experiencing cougar management problems to opt-in to the program. The Governor's office is trying to position itself to veto this county opt-in provision.

This bill would help ensure public safety in Washington and protect private property, livestock, as well as human life and safety.

Please contact the Governor TODAY and respectfully urge her to sign this vital hunting initiative in full without vetoing any portion of it. You can call Governor Gregoire at (360) 902-4111 or fax her a letter at (360) 753-4110. To send an email, please visit http://www.governor.wa.gov/contact/default.asp.

I wish we could hunt the big cats in OR with dogs.I understand that our law has changed,If A LANDOWNER HAS MADE A FORMAL COMPLAINT HE CAN HAVE ANY HOUND MAN ON THE LIST COME AND KILL THE COUGAR.I don't know if I want to be on the list though,as it it is not legal to run lions with dogs.It may put a guy in a bad spot.I need to do more research on the topic.

To the Governor:

"I am a commercial livestock producer from Yakima who has lost cattle and had a close call on a horse due to cougar depredation recently.

I URGE you to sign the Cougar Hound bill into law.

I read the account of a Town Hall meeting you had with Yakima Residents a few months ago.

When a representative of the Wa Cattleman's Assoc. told you Cattlemen had an issue with large predators eating livestock and we needed compensation ......

..... you told him ...... you wanted to look into ways to prevent them being eaten in the first place .....

I could not agree more!

And THIS bill goes a big step in that direction .....

Once again ... I urge you to sign this bill into law!"

**********************************

With this Governor's ties to animal rights ....... I am not holding my breath ...... HOWEVER, Dino Rossi is on the march ..... and Gregoir is up for re-election this year.

(After three counts she only won by 100 - 200 votes and that was after King County made several trips to the grave yards)

you may want to get ahold of 7th district house rep Joel Kretz (should also be a member of the cattle assc.) he is a big proponent of dogs for cats. He has a few dogs himself.

Savagerookie,

In fact I had a phone conversation with Repr. Kretz when we started having trouble.

A FINE fellow indeed!!!

I just checked the status of this piece of legislation and by golly ...... I think it was signed into to law by our leftist governor!!!!!

Eat my words and pass the hound chow!!!

Way to go! I'm surprised the governor signed it but it is a good law. I'll bet that the politicians signed quietly and quickly before the Seattle huggers caught on that their ban on hunting with hounds is being incrementally repealed.

The only down side is that with increased hound hunting the Game Dept. will inevitably restrict over the counter tags, and so restrict those who call cougars.

Before the infamous Seattle vote to ban hounds, cougar hunting in Washington was limited to a few draw permits and precisely controlled kill numbers.

After they banned hounds was when over the counter tags became available. That's when we started calling cougars again, and have killed one.

For cattlemen and Game managers who want control, hunting with hounds is super efficient. If the law is widespread across cougar areas of the state however, it will probably end over the counter tags and spell the end of 99% of cougar calling in WA within a few years.

Three 44's can I bring hounds up there and hunt with a res that has a tag? If so just let me know.I'm willing to come up and let a licensed hunter kill a lion over my dogs.

Okanagon,

I would be disappointed if calling cougars got "axed" .... but I doubt it will go that far.

I see this bill as a good measure in that it requires the county governments to participate if there is a problem.

I see "problems" more as habituated cats that are not living "the right lifestyle" than the cougars typically bagged and tagged during our state's big game hunts which are 1) living in typical cat territory and 2) eating right.

Duane@ssu,

I don't know about resident vs. non-resident ........ but I have another thought ....... I will PM you with it.
