Harmeet Dhillon, the Assistant Attorney General who runs the Justice Departmentโs Civil Rights Division, laid out what happened when the new leadership announced it would enforce the presidentโs executive orders: โ300 ๐ฐ๐ง ๐ต๐ฉ๐ฐ๐ด๐ฆ ๐ข๐ต๐ต๐ฐ๐ณ๐ฏ๐ฆ๐บ๐ด ๐ฒ๐ถ๐ช๐ต.
The division is one of the largest at Main Justice, and she says The mandate they walked away from, in her words:
Then the rebuild, under DOGE restrictions and budget limits. Dhillon says, adding that the division now works โ๐ข๐ด ๐ข ๐ด๐ช๐ฏ๐จ๐ญ๐ฆ ๐ถ๐ฏ๐ช๐ต ๐ธ๐ช๐ต๐ฉ ๐จ๐ณ๐ฆ๐ข๐ต ๐ป๐ฆ๐ข๐ญ ๐ข๐ฏ๐ฅ ๐ฅ๐ฆ๐ฅ๐ช๐ค๐ข๐ต๐ช๐ฐ๐ฏโ inside the statutory framework of the civil rights laws.
What that unit is doing now: ๐ฌ๐ญ๐จ๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐๐ข๐ฌ๐๐ซ๐ข๐ฆ๐ข๐ง๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐ข๐ง ๐ก๐ข๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐ , helping states stop illegal voting, going after universities that take federal money and discriminate on race, prosecuting antisemitism, and pursuing the protesters who obstructed churchgoers in Minnesota.
Critics call the departures a purge of career staff. Dhillonโs answer is that the lawyers chose the exit, and the American people voted for the agenda they wouldnโt carry out. Voters hired a president to enforce these laws. Lawyers who refuse to do it are free to find other work.
