I would'nt wax the whole trap. You will have trouble keeping it set and not to mention getting bit by it. Just wax the spring end or do like i do and spray paint them.
DON'T WAX BODY GRIPPERS!!!!!! they will bite you and you'll never keep them set. just paint or dye them a your good to go. but to dye them you need to rust them first. the fastest way to rust traps is to find a patch of tall grass and throw the traps in the grass for a few days, you'll be supprised at how fast they rust in grass /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gifonce ya get that thin layer of rust on them they are ready to paint or dye /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
Hey thanks a lot, i'll do that. what color do you recommend me spray painting them then, i've never heard of that, but i've heard of rusting them but not the way of throwing them in the grass thats a good idea, thanks.
The color is totaly up to you but try to blend them. I have brown ones, tan ones, black ones, and i have camo ones. I know of some guys that use them in alot of snow that paint them white. Just be sure to remove all the factory oil first if you buy them new.
If you can find Sani-Flush (the old cleaner used for toilets), get some and boil your traps in it. Add about two cups to 10 gallons of water. Boil them for about an hour. After you boil them, pour the water off the traps. Don't lift them out of the water because the oil will be sitting on top of the water and it'll just get back on them. Then you can rust them if you're going to dye or dip them if you're going to use a speed dip. It's also a good idea to put some bricks in the bottom of whatever you boil them in to prevent the metal from overheating and weakening the springs.
PS. If you aren't a member of the Idaho Trappers Association this would be a good year to join. We just got notified the anti's are planning a major campaign this year. We only have about 250 members and the state sold over 1200 trapping licenses last year.
Both Sani-Flush and Red Devil Lye works great but it is getting harder and harder to find around here. I started using unscented dish washing powder about 5 years ago. Works just as good at removing factory grease plus it is easier to find AND it won't put your eye out.
you can wax them and they will be fast and not rust as bad, but after you wax them just take a little butane torch and melt the wax off of your trigger and dog, i do all of mine that way and i've never been in one because there waxed, been in them for other reasons but thats another story
