Weatherby Vanguard Compact

Picked up one of these yesterday at a local shop open on Sunday. It is a 243 Win and seems like it will make a pretty neat coyote/varmint rifle. Things I like, short 20" barrel, light weight, easy to maneuver. It came with a youth stock that looks to be a Bell and Carlson or very similar but the adult stock is a cheap piece of crap tupperware. The barrel fits so tight in the channel that it looks like it won't even let it bolt up correctly. Action is smooth but has a horrible trigger. Feels like two cinder blocks rubbing together. I figure a trigger job will fix the trigger or replace with a RB or Timney. As far as the stock, I like the youth model best, it will work fine with heavy cloths and I'm no giant guy either.
I'm sure some of you have a similar rifle, any pro's or con's to clue me in on?

I just got a Vanguard S2 Backcountry in 240 Wby Mag. Not the same gun, I know, but I like it so far (as you said, the action is very smooth). First few rounds down the barrel and the less than 1MOA at 100 yards held true. I just adjusted my trigger and it is good enough for a hunting gun. The 2-stage will take a little getting used to. I like the 3 position safety and the bolt takes apart easily.

Had one in .308, great gun light and well balanced, I put a Timney in it which really made it shine. If I understand correctly Weatherby seemed to like building a single pressure point into their stocks instead a true free float. Seemed to work on the ones I've owned as they've all been accurate.

It's possible you actually have a Vanguard Carbine, not a youth model. They came with a 20" #1 barrel and Tupperware stock, I have one in .223. The Bell and Carlson could have been purchased afterwards and cut down for a kid or smaller person to shoot.

While I don't have that model I do prefer a small stock for hunting as the clothes are usually layered and 90 percent of the time I am wearing a pack.

Not to come as a shock to anyone, but I was totally wrong about the youth stock being "like" a B&C, its WOOD! My bad. Decided to float the barrel and immediately realized it was wood. Oh well, still better than tuperware.

I guess kind of a black textured look. Still a decent stock, I would have swore it was composite till I hit it with the sand paper to open the barrel channel.
