Weird Pheasant Blinder On This One?

We went out after some birds today and shot this guy:

I occasionally shoot a banded bird, but this was a first. No band on him either, so I am stumped. Anyone know what this is for? We went coyote calling in the morning and pheasant hunted the rest of the day. Beats getting shoved around at the mall.

Man that is pathetic. If that's what they do at hunting clubs to help shooters get their birds, then I'm going to be an advocate for outlawing this practice. Even though not everyone is lucky enough to hunt wild birds, this goes to far. PATHETIC!

That comes from the hatch pens. Captive raised bird.

I believe that is to keep them from fighting each other.

He must have escaped before they could remove it or they forgot before it was released.

IS that what that's for? I've never before seen (or heard) of such a thing, but then I've never belonged to a "hunting club" either.

Looks almost like some weird variation on a falconry hood, but I can't imagine what use it would be on a pheasant.

Even though I'm not a tree-hugging bunny muncher, that blinder seems pretty painful. I wonder if they were raised in larger confines, that would keep the pecking down?

They raise them at a prison about 2 hours from where I was hunting. I don't do the hunting club thing, only private land. We mainly hunt eyebrows and ditches in and around wheatfields. The birds raised at the prison usually have a band on their leg. We shot two birds where we got this blinded one and he was the only one with the blinder. If they use these to keep the birds from killing each other in the pens fine, but it sure was a nasty looking contraption. He did spook and fly all the same though. Thanks for the info.

It's just a clip to prevent them from fighting and pecking each other in the pens. The one in the picture got away before the clip was removed. It looks bad in the pic, because it isn't designed to be left on a bird when they are released. It got beat up in the brush or when he hit the ground.

In the pens they are needed. try raising birds without them and see how much 'put n take' pheasants cost. Used properly in the pens they are no big deal for the birds.

He most likely escaped before they took the blinder off. The blinder got beat up in the bush or some of your shot hit it. The purpose of them is to stop the birds from pecking each other and also to prevent them from breaking there necks. A scared Pheasant will flush up and ram into the netting a lot of times breaking its neck or hanging its self. With the blinders, they are less likely to flush up and hurt themselfs.
