well does it work for Red LED 501 question

To all of you using the Red LED 501, how does it work for a scanning light? How far can you pick up eyes? How does it compare to the $2o headlamp?

-Thanks

The only time I've hunted with my 501 I had a pair of yotes pop out into a field about 150 yds out and had no problem seeing eyes.

I have both a Ultrfire 501 and the $20 headlamp. The Ultrafire works great for scanning or for a shotgun light. The headlamp I have has yellow gel paper on it so it's probably twice as bright as the 501. It will easily ID out to 100 yards and pick up eyes much further. For the money the headlamp is hard to beat.

I got the 501 for 22 dollars on ebay. The light is much brighter than my headlamp with red gel paper. For 2 extra dollars I would go with the 501. Not to mention you can always use it for a backup kill light if you have to. Can safely identify out to 100 through my scope.

That red gel paper on ebay is way to dark for the headlamp for scanning. I use a wratten 24 filter and it works great, here's a wratten 25 which should work also...

These might work well also, fire or light red, going to have to paste it in your browser.....

The headlamp works much better with yellow or green. The yellow in mine is very bright. Havn't tried the green yet, but planning on it. Has anyone used the 501 with a smooth reflector? Love to hear the results.

While you're buying the lens, get a spare smooth reflector

http://www.dealextreme.com/p/26-5mm-smooth-aluminum-drop-in-module-set-without-emitter-5937

and paint the reflector flat black.

What kind of range can you ID to with this setup. I didn't order the smooth reflector, but did get the aspheric lense. It's shipped, but I haven't gotten it yet.

I have this setup, (didn't paint the reflector) got it after season last year. I took it out last night and and for scanning it lights up mailbox reflectors 600 yards down the street. Didn't look through the scope but I think you could ID 100 yards or so.

I'm curious on how long it lasts, if it gets warm when used as a scanning light, and how much the painted reflector helps for those that have hunted with it?

Excuse my ignorance, but what does this do?

For an aspherical lens, the reflector only serves a spacer to locate the lens at the proper distance from the LED. If you leave the reflector shiny, then it produces an ugly beam pattern with some flood. A true aspheric only projects a tight beam in the shape of the LED (square), without any artifacts.

Sorry, I'm kinda slow. So you're saying the new lens won't bennefit from a smooth reflector? Just paint the orange peel one black and the beam will be square like the headlamp when it fully adjusted out? What will the new lens do to the beam if the orange peel reflector is left shiney?

Correct. You can just paint the orange peel reflector. I bought the shiny one to have as a spare reflector that would improve the throw if the aspheric didn't work out. Either the aspheric lens or the smooth reflector are better for throw than the "as-received" light. When you're buying from DX, it takes a long time to receive your order.

Thanks. Like I said I'm a little slow. From reading these posts the reflector change requires soldering? Probably counts me out. If the lens is that big of an improvement and only $3 that's a no brainer.

Reflector change is super-simple, no tools needed, no soldering. Just keep your fingerprints off the inside of the smooth reflector, or you will stain the smooth finish.
