Western Washington

I'm not exactly new to western Washington, but I haven't done any hunting sense I've been here. I'd like to get out this summer to try my hand at coyotes and get some scouting in for the winter. But trying to decipher the local hunting regulations in my area have been a pain. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

So if anyone can point me towards a GMU near Yelm that has coyote and deer (hopefully elk and hiking/camping trails too) that it's legal to use centerfire rifles in (preferably with out special GMU specific seasons / regulations)I would appreciate it.

The Olympic National Forest ( not the park) and the Capital Stae Forest have alot of room to move around in. Have plenty of Bear Spray handy if your going to do any calling in that country in the summer.

Jay, do you mean Weyerhaeuser land? I didn't get much when I tried to google it.

From what I have seen, most of Oly and Capitol are no centerfire rifle from what I remember. I have done a bit of hiking up there. It seems to be full of hikers, plenty of mountainside for backstop though. Maybe I should double check when the new game and fish regs come out.

P.S. I should be picking up a Olympic Arms K8 Friday. Do you think it would be better to canibalize a 2x7x33 Leupold VXII (brighter)or a 3x10x44 Simmons 44 (more magnification, MUCH easier adjustment)mag until I can pick up a scope for it?

Where you at?
Weyerhauser is open to walk in right now, after it warms up they will close it due to fire. Capitol forrest is mostly open to centerfire and hikers and ATVs and pick-ups and yuppies and and and....,Out by Shelton, Skokomish, there is a lot of area and that goes clear over to the Wynoochee and out to Wishkah, etc. Down towards Pe-ell and the Chehalis River valley is some area. Olympic Nat. FORREST is wide open, the PARK is closed totally to guns, watch out for reservation lands.
Up towards Elbe and Morton in the Cinnebar is a lot of open land. I have been exploring around the Steam plant, Bucoda area some lately, found some area.
Around here I do best around farm areas, find permission hunt places, sheep farms and chicken farms can work if you ask, Scatter Creek is Ok, shotgun only, go after the bird hunters are done. Have you looked into hunting on the Fort?
Hancock is more towards Kapowsin, Orting area. Locked up, pay to get in, its a good deal. Game and fish regs are out now, have been.
I used to have an Oly K8, you'll like it if you like AR's. either scope is fine.
I have been in this area for 30 years or so folks around here are inundated with "hunters" from Tacoma etc. they are pretty shy about strangers.
Good luck

Mortre I meant the land behind Lake Kapowsin that Bofire mentioned also. Runs all the way back to nearly Mt. Rainier. You can get your permit money back by the amount of firewood they allow you to take if you're a wood burner. Not a lot of folks in there after regular hunting season. The reason I mentioned it because it isn't far from where you live in Yelm.

You can also save a bit on gas money. Wait I didn't say that. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif It's a bad place to hunt. don't want to go there. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
