Wet Walnut Media

Anybody ever heard of using wet Walnut media. Mine gets so dirty, I usually throw it out after one use, using dry. By the way walnut Bird Litter works great.

Hey Poppaflea,

Do you get alot of red dust residue on your casings when you use walnut media. I tried some and it left a film of red dust all over the casings and was all over me when sorting out the brass after tumbling. I switched back to corn cob because it was so messy.

Dust and dirt everywhere and when you run it through a squirrel cage that dust gets in your nose something awful. But it does clean much faster and better than corn cob.

The SS media looks good but the chance of leaving a piece in the case and ruining a barrel don't sound so good.

I actually put a little water in my walnut media every time I tumble. It helps keep the dust down. Not to much or it will stick in the cases. As far as the dirt, throw a dryer sheet in your media. It sucks the dirt up.

Throw it out? I have been running mine for 12 years. Have another box
still sitting and waiting. I have washed it once or twice is all. Run case polish
and you shouldn't have any problems with dust.

I have a batch that has lot of rds on it yea its dirty but still cleans. I get a little dust but i pick my cases out one at a time. Ten i have a batch with brass polish added and there is zero dust and the brass come out like gold. Both are walnut media. My cleaning batch has red rouge added and with the red rouge in there it seems more dusty then with out it.

I have been putting in a used dryer sheet in my media every now and then to clean it up. I've haven't had to change it for a couple years so far.

What are you washing your media with?
I have some with case lube on it and need to clean it but was wondering what worked best.
Thanks

Unfortunately to get a good cleaning, I have to tumble my brass for 24 hours. Next batch will get a little polish and water added to it.

I use the used dryer sheet as well with crushed walnut shells that I get in bulk from a local pet store. The media is much cheaper that way and the dryer sheet attracts dust like a magnet.
I would not use water, I use NuFinish car polish, just a little squirt on top before turing on the tumbler, it works wonders on the brass leaving a nice bright sheen to it and cuts down my time to between 4 and 6 hours depending on the brass condition.
I can clean many many thousands of cases doing this before replacing the media.

I put in in my dillon media separator tub add dish soap and water and stir it around good
by hand. Then do two or three rinses. I tilt the tub to face the sun and turn
the media over until it's all dry.

I put mine in a 5 gal. bucket with liquid laundry soap & hot water, stir it up & mix it with my hands, rinse out 2x, rewash 1 more time, rinse, drain through a window screen, lay out in the basement on an old bed sheet to dry. I have not bought media in 18 yrs.
You will also see the "dust" disappear by washing. I also use a dryer sheet when polishing, traps 90%+ dust if any.

I'm with 5spd I bought three 5lb bags of walnut 18 yrs ago, I still have one left because I was too lazy to wash it out last summer and just threw it out, add the dryer sheet after a little polish (every third load or so)has vibed for a few minutes and you are good to go. I'll never go back to corn cob.
When you do wash it dish soap and hot water rinse it really well and dry.
