some time back i picked up hr handy in 223 and 60 gr rem amo. it would not shoot the rem. today after a little work with hornady 53 gr vmax got 1/2 three shot at 100 yds and 1 1/4 at 200 yds. as it likes the 53gr hornady what would work for yots and hogs? been told vmax is not good for hogs. thanks for any help.

I can tell you first hand Vmax sucks on pigs. I made a pretty good shot on a 250lb sow from 80yds with a 50gr vmax and she barely flinched.

Try the heaviest soft point, jacketed HP, or partition ammo you can get to group. Anything that will group around 1" at 100yds should be fine

Anything over 55 generally requires a fast twist barrel and I doubt the Handi Rifle is equipped as such. Even most 60's require a 1-9 or a 1-10 twist to stabilize.

64 grain winchester powerpoints shoot good in my 1 in 12" twist CZ. Took it to Africa for small game and killed a 200+lb bushpig with it along with some other stuff (Caracal, genet, monkey, baboon). While that bullet worked much better than a standard 55 grain would have, I think the Barnes tsx is going to give more consistant penetration.

The Barnes TSX load should be just what the doctor ordered. Those are great bullets, and accurate too in every rifle I have shot them in. I load my own, but you might give a box of factory stuff a try for accuracy.

Glad I'm not the only one !

The H&R hsndi rifles came in both 1/12 and 1/9 twist rates. The best way to tell if you dont know is to do the cleaning rod trick. I had a Handi that was 1/12 that would shoot Fusion 62gr 3/4" at 100yrds. If you do have 1/12 twist try 55 gr barnes or the 60gr nosler partition.

I agree with the TSX recommendations. I have used them in a 220 Swift and a RRA carbine. Dead hogs. I used the 45 gr TSX to kill a bunch with behind the shoulder shots at 150 yds or less. The 223 does a better job with the 45 gr TSX than I ever expected. Always get a pass through on behind the shoulder shots. Took a 175 pounder last Friday that only ran 30 yards. Recently received some 50 gr TSX's to try. Interesting trade-off between potential better penetration vs. effect of higher velocity on the 45 gr's. Sounds like fun!

TSX would be a good choice. I used to use 62gr now I use 70s. Not sure what twist the Handi is.

Paritions would be good also.

I have 600 64gr Win Powerpoints here that I have yet to try, but I imagine they would work with good shot placement....
