What are your groups at 200 yards?

I've been trying to sight in my rifle at 200 yards with factory hornady ammo and I've found out that she likes the 32 grains alot better.I can get a 3 shot 1.25" group at 200 yards.I know this can be better, and I realize in a hunting situation that this is not at all bad,but can it be better? Is it impossible to want to cover a 3 shot group with a dime?

I'm not sure what kind of beast you're gunning for but 1.25" groups @ 200 seems pretty good to me. You are shooting off-hand, right? lol, what kind of gun are you shooting?

have no experience with the 204, though I want to get one in the near future, however my RRA 24" varminter will shoot around .5" at 200 if I have a decent day, this is with reman ammo.
My LR rifle which I'm still in the load developement stages has shot some .284 200 gr wildcats into .8" at 300 yds.

hello, sounds pretty good to me with factory ammo i don't own a 204 however 1.25 groups @ 200 yards is probably as good as a guy could hope to shoot...if i could manage that with factory ammo i would have no complaints none..zero..zilch..

I had a 25" Douglas SS barrel put on my Varmit Browning Boss. Now it is just a plain barrel no boss, end of barrel is .80" . They also put in aluminum pillars for the screws. It has several 3 shot groups,at 300yds, at 1" and more at 1.5". At 100 it runs .250 to 1/2" , 200 not sure, probably 1/2 to 3/4". I shot most of these groups with the 33gr V-max and 35 gr Berger. The Berger 40 gr... I don't remember it being any different.T.20

I'm getting around 1" at 200 with hand loads in my .223. 50 grain v-max, win case, 27 grains of H335, CCI 450 mag primer. I'd be mighty happy with 1.25" @ 200 with factory ammo myself.

"Is it impossible to want to cover a 3 shot group with a dime?"

Are you kidding this is the internet.........its possible to cover it with a thumbtack. Unless you are planning on shooting coins you need to consider your target, and the expected range and determine what parameters you will need for accuracy.

My motto is "as long as I can cover the group with a woodchuck @ 300 it's good to go" hahaha. Like skb2706 stated " consider what your shooting at". Why the need for dime size groups if you were looking at shooting elk at 200 yards. I think that consistancy is what I would look more closely at. My .02 worth.

I use a sheet of cardboard, put a 3/8" approxamatley, cross on it and when the cross hairs cover the lines without leaving them I squeeze off. It seems to help make smaller groups?T.20

Thanks alot guys.I guess I just needed to hear that that wasn't too bad for factory ammo.I wish that I had a place to go and shoot those long distances that you guys do /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gif,but to tell you the truth,I'll wait until whatever I'm shooting will get as close as possible.I just wanted to know that I could put it in the eye socket if I want to be precise. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I like to shoot clay pigeons @ 200. I think they're 4" in dia? If you can consistently hit one of those 9 out of 10 times at 200 that's good shooting as far as I'm concerned. This way, it's not just about shooting a "group." A group could be 3 shots in 1"; but it's 2" right and a little low. I think it's more practicle to shoot that way, and it engrains confidence and helps one learn to shoot better in the wind. I guess the same concept could be had with 1" or 2" circles on paper, but I enjoy the gratification of an explosive hit. *qb

I don't know what my groups are outta my .204 at 200yds...........but the little digger squirrels haven't complained as they seem to go in different zipcodes at that range too! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Try a Uncle Buds Bulls Bags I guarrantee it will tighten your groups. My 22 mag was shooting 1 inch groups, off my bull bag almost bullet hole in bullet hole it's the best rest i've ever owned it really helps sighting in for sure. I haven't tried shooting my .204 off it yet just got three different factory ammos to see which one I get the best groups with haven't had a chance to go yet.

skb2706 & quarterbored.......very well said.i get obsessed as the next guy about groups & thats ok,but...if you have a load that works zero it & practice on clay pigeons-water bottles-milk jugs ect...as a hunter if its m.o.a. it's plenty good...

I like the water bottles with red dye in them. There's just something cool about that red mist way out there. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The answer to the question is probably yes but what are you willing to do to make it better? Outside of practice of course have there been any modifications to the rifle? Are you shooting off the best rest available or is there room to improve? Are you willing to hand load for consistancey or is off-the-shelf ammo acceptable?

.22-250, Remington 700VLS, 26" factory bull barrel.

250 yards groups with Federal Premium 55 gr. NBTs come in at 1.25" (3 shots).
