what bipod

I use the SP shooting stix and now have ordered the SP Explorer monopod. It depends on what kind of shooting you are going to do. I used to buy Harris bipods .. got too expensive so I went with Rock Mount bipods (I think that is the correct name.)

Buy once and cry once. Just get a Harris to begin with.

Rock mount is just a chinkwanese (technical term /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif) knock-off of the harris. I tried one just to see and junked it. It just seemed cheap. After you break one of the rock mounts and buy another replacement you just spent more than you did if you would have got the harris initially. I tend to be hard on my equiptment though. Just my 2 cents.

I use a couple harris'. A 6-9, and 9-13. Both are swivel, notched leg versions. If I need to get higher I use shooting sticks. Sometimes I skip the bipod and just shoot off of a pack, and if I need to get higher, once again, I use the sticks.

I'm still a noob, but I just made some out of square wood dowels and a bolt through the middle of them. It cost about $5 and very easy and fun.

I have to agree, buy the harris. I love the 13-27 inch model, high enough that you can sit upright and low enough to get over some of the grass out here when I need to be prone.

This is the one I use. The bipod mount know is the only thing attached to the gun. Clicks in and out and you can pan and tilt the gun any way you like. It's a sitdown hight and can extend to twice as far as you see it. It's made by an outfit in Boise ID. Don't know their name. I'd have to look it up.

I never cared for the bipods that hang all the wieght on the sling screw, especially for a wood stock.

I like this bipod or a set of shooting sticks. Varmit Al's has a pretty good description on how to make a set and there seems to be a lot of good ideas here on the forum.

I agree with brdeano, the Harris Look-alikes are not going to have the longevity or toughness of the original Harris. My son got one and it didn't make it through the first season before it broke.

That being said, I no longer use my Harris. Too noisy. Too short. I am now using the Stoney Point Rapid Pivot Bipod--not the sticks. They work great. They are similar to what Bob from Idaho is using on his CZ and I think they are less money than a Harris. Here are some pics from Monday morning that might give you a better idea of what they're like. (plus I get to show off the lightest colored coyote of the year!) These are the cat's meow IMO. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif
