What brake?

I'm replacing my factory LVSF .204 barrel with a Lilja, same contour. Rifle is light weight and hard to spot hits. I'm looking for opinions on what to install. I have a Vais on my deer rig and love it. I don't think I want ports on the bottom for obvious reasons.

Pics would be nice too. Several years ago I remember a Michigan based gunsmith who manufactured a nice looking design but I'm unable to locate them. I remember their slogan; "Fire the spotter."

Thanks in advance,

SF

I have a KDF and it turned my 300 RUM into a 243 as far as recoil but it has ruined my hearing being I shot it five times on an Antelope hunt years ago without protection. I also have a Vias on my 375 RUM and it made no difference. As a matter of fact, I believe it kicks worse now.

I like Vais brakes. They are very popular with the light gun 1000 yard shooters. They don't effect the accuracy of the rifle and bring the recoil down to less than half what it was. I have several on my own rifles.

I think a quick discharge would be needed for a .375, good god..375RUM. Thats some serious firepower.

The schrewd looks like a winner. Any other varmint styles would be appreciated.

Thanks...

Another Vais fan here. Mine was installed on my custom 220 Swift by the man that built the gun for me- none other than George Vais himself. He is a bit of a kook, but in my opinion, a master craftsman in every way.

I like seeing the hits on my targets, and with the Vais brake, I see every one. I like that.

Ive used the shrewd on several 375 rugers and it makes a big difference. As any brake the bigger the bore the less effective they are but Ive had 12 year old kids shooting the 375s.

I have the Vias on a 7 STW and it is very effective. Vias sold the company to a very good man to have your work done by....I can't say enough good about this guy...wish that I could remember his name.

point blank benchrest is the only non-brake legal matches. Anything from light gun to 50bmg allows brake use (IBS). Brakes make for less recoil and torque in the bags for quicker recovery. You have to get used to the breaks on either side of you, but it comes in time.

I have Vais, KDF, and one of Bill Truitt's design. The vais is slightly quiter, but the other 2 reduce a little more recoil.

Depending on how tightly you hold it against your shoulder and what you are using for front support, I agree.

204 has very little recoil as it is I would not bother

I've found that the only time I'm not seeing my hits with either of mine is when I relax the hold against my shoulder, or I'm shooting off my bipod without some carpet for padding between the bipod legs and the bench top..

There are some very good brakes out there though and there are some that work very little with some real negatives with their use..

I always dread people not responding to your posted question such as blinddog. I know I want a brake for the 204 and asked for preferences. My question was what brake was working for you not if I needed one or not. I shot thousands of rounds through the rifle and she is light, not able to see impact.

I thank those who responded to the question asked.

Thanks, SF

SF,
I too have a LVSF in 204, but I'm able to see over 90% of my hits! I'm having Dan Carey build me an upper in .223 and I sent him a Vais brake to put on it. There is a ZM comp. on my Colt HBAR right now, and God is it loud!!!!!!! It does work, all the rifle does is "shudder" a little. I never lose the sight picture....in fact, the crosshairs rarely come off an IPSC target at 100 yds.
