What does everyone use for a portable shooting bench....

Hey everyone,

I am interested in picking up a portable shooting bench and have been looking at three different ones:

Stukeys shooting bench http://www.shootingbenches.com/order.htm

Coyote Jakes shooting bench http://www.coyotejakes.com/

or the varmint masters bench http://www.varmintmasters.net/Price/orderbr/orderbr.htm . I was wondering if anyone here had any experience with any of these. I think I like the shape of the tops better on the varmint masters and Stukeys bench than the Coyote Jakes. The other two seem to have a little more table top area. I was wondering if anyone here has any experience with either of these benches? They are pricey but I'm planning on starting to shoot alot at our farm and I think it may be a wise investment.....especially since it is portable and I can move it around as needed. Thanks.

I use and highly recommend the coyotejakes bench. You can also get a kit and do your own if you are not happy with the std bench. Changing out the top to what you like should not be a problem as I have a friend that did this to his.

Hey there new new2coyotes....it depends on what you want & what is going to suit your needs the best, but I built my own. I had a piece of scrap 3/4" plywood & cut a bench out of it. I bought a pair of folding table legs at my local Lowe's home improvement store for about $19. I got to looking at buying one also, but couldn't see giving that kind of price for no more than what they are. I still haven't put the finishing touches on it. I haven't decided whether to carpet it or clear coat it. Here's a picture of it...

I also built my own shooting rest out of some scrap steel. The only money I have in it was buying the sand bag for the top. It's not pretty but it sure works for me & beats spending $30-$50 for one and still having to buy a sandbag. Here's a picture of it...

Also....here's an excellent thread on shooting benches and several sets of plans for building your own bench. If you can build your own it'll sure save you some money. Good luck!!

Here is one I built for $60-70. Used 2 4'X 4' 3/4" plywood glued and screwed together, 3 pipe flanges, cut 3 bevels to cant the legs and 3 1-1/2" X 36" pieces of pipe.

Piece of plywood and table legs from home depot or menards. But i hardly used mine last week. I used me pad from my cot and layed on the ground

I went to Staples, an office supply chain, and got a fold up table for under $20.00 (on sale), and use that. It is 4 foot by 2 foot and the prairie dogs don't know I'm "El Cheapo" when I shoot them!

I know Olympic class shooters who can shoot more accurately off a matt with a sling than they can off a benchrest. Although not Olympic class, you can count me among them. A good shooting coat, a good sling, nice matt, adjustable cheekpiece and proper handstop, and I shoot tighter groups than from a benchrest.

Of course, it is irrelevant for field shooting because you can't see over the grass, sagebrush, bushes, etc. when prone, you have to use a benchrest to see the targets.

I made mine from plywood and steel pipe that screws onto flanges. It sets up in a minute and lays flat in the trunk. Steady as a rock!

Going to go use mine this weekend.........there is not one chance in hell I'm laying on the ground....mat or no mat, on the eastern plains of CO, mid summer, backed right up to 640 acres of pds...I don't care how accurate that position is. In fact I may just set up the table in the back of the truck and shoot from up there. Its 40 miles to any kind of medical attention and believe me you lay on the ground out there much .........you'll need it.
