What would it take to convert a .223WSSM Rifle (Winchester Model 70 Super Shadow) to a .243 WSSM in the same rifle.

Is it just a matter of putting on a new Barrel?

Thanks!

I don't mean to take exception with your comment, but I don't think that is gonna work. I'm not expert, but a .223 action is based upon a 5.56 caliber casing and a .243 actions is based upon a necked down 30 caliber .308 casing. So you need not only change the barrel, but you need a .30 caliber action as well if you want to go .243 caliber. Might want to check with a Gunsmith because that could cost you much more money than just the price of a barrel.

we're not talking .223 vs .243. it's .223WSSM vs. .243WSSM. completely different.

Hey Thx guys! Guess I learned something new today. But I guess I'm somewhat at a loss to understand why theres a difference when it comes to Winchester mags.

The fact is that the .223 WSSM and .243 WSSM calibers are based on the same size of cartridge, with the only difference being the caliber diff. IE: In theory you could take the .243 WSSM Brass and "Re-size" it to .223 WSSM size just by running it through your .223 Full Length Re-sizing dies. Again, in theory but not practical since the WSSM brass is so much thicker, etc..

With the .243 Win and .223 Rem, they are totally different base cartridges in size, shape, etc..

Thanks for the explanation Slugger. I love consistency, but when it comes to magnums, I have little to no experience and don't own one. Oh well, I'll chalk this one up to a lesson learned.

"magnum" is a meaningless word for the most part. Change it to ".223 flufferdoodle to .243 flufferdoodle" and you have the same thing. Lots of calibers are more or less the same brass wise/bolt face, and only require a new barrel installed properly to change, maybe a little brass trimming for length. 30-06/.270/25-06 etc. Those 'super short mags' fall in that category.
