I have guided for waterfowl for a few years and I have seen them all in good and bad conditions and the advice so far is bang on I love Rem 870 and BPS and I shoot a Mosberg 500 slug gun for deer I have killed 3 Deer in two years with that gun

and it has never let me down!

as for the semis I shoot a Beretta extrema 2 with kick off for waterfowl and coyote/predators including Black Bear.

for upland and small game hunting I love my Browning Gold fusion in 20ga 3" truth be told it can handle 99% of my shotgun hunting ....Goose can get a little expensive for tungsten matrix and the like...if you are shooting 3-400 birds a year! hence the Extrema 3.5 Winchester expert BB at 1550 fps works well as does 3" estate cartridge BB! ...on the cheap for early season and first shot late season followed by Kent faststeel 3.5" #1 and #BB

start with a gun you can afford that will have a niche for ever (slug gun from 870) and move up and branch out as the situations change and you can afford to get something different!  ......just my 2 cents....

God Bless you and keep you safe on your travels in the field

and may he show you the wonders of the wild that he has shown me!   Jonathan
