What firearm do you like best for night hunting?

17 Mach-IV- -fast, light bullet explodes inside varmint--not much chance of ricoshey (sp)-- not so loud as to require hearing protection or spook neighbors-- With a vari x scope on 3x and spotlight on top, can shoot between cows legs if necessary.
Or what ever I happen to have in hand at time!!

my 788 in 22-250 has been the ticket for me thus far, I just got a TC Pro Hunter in 22-250, it shoots a little better, but I don't know how the single shot at night will be...guess I'll have to try.

.223. I would really hate to see ya'll coming to hunt my ranch, shooting an HMR, /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif especially shooting between cows legs!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Randy
when where you planning to have us come out to your ranch? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif
Doug

I've never seen a coyote standing between a cow's legs. But, I can sure envision losing hunting rights on a place when you end up crippling a cow because you tried to shoot through it's legs! Wow...

Ain't happenin' Doug. My coyotes don't need to die a slow death, nor do my cows legs need trimmin'. I've had coyotes circle a bunch of cows, and actually use them for cover, but always wait until they are far clear. I don't need that kind of aggrivation. Randy

I like my hopped up mini in .223. with a 40g v-max it's been very fur friendly so far, and kills 'em dead. I also like to have a quick recovery shot, so the semi auto works for me. But I just picked up a Savage 10FP in .223 that's gonna be my new calling rifle. Since a lot of the areas I hunt have a lot of pressure, I need to be very aware of noise, and the bolt action will let me be just a bit quieter than the mini.

Randy,
I was joking about coming out to your farm with the 12/223 combo. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif But if you need help with those crows... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I know Doug,I had one of those "up and down" combos. They really are cool to have. I don't shoot at crows too much, they are fairly scarce here, and when they do come through, they keep moving along, so there are not many opportunities. I have had them buzz around me a few times while day calling, and if I'd have had the combo, I would have definately busted them. Take care, Randy

Hey Randy,

I crack myself up sometimes.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowingsmilie.gif
