What grain bullet for a 1 in 12 twist, 223?

Wondering what grain bullet would give me the best accuracy in a 223 with a 1 in 12 twist? Factory ammo, 55 grain ones arn't too accurate. About a 2 inch group at a 100 yards.
Thanks OB

40's would probably do well, although there's no reason 55's shouldn't be accurate in a 12 twist. My 12 twist shoots 40's very well, but 55's shoot well enough in it that I can't really tell if the difference is me or the load.

OB,

I have an older Tikka T-3, 223 Rem. with a 1:12 twist
barrel, and it loves 50 gr. V-Max bullets, with VV-N133, in
my hand loads. This load holds my personal best group,
from a factory rifle(

If you can find some...the Bulk Pack Federals in 50gr HPs should shoot extremely well...

I used to buy them for $52 per 200 at Wal-Mart, but lately I've seen some of them advertised at almost double and triple that price by individuals..

What rifle are you shooting them out of,a 12 twist should not have a problem with 55gr bullets. My cz with a 12 twist shoots 40,45,50,and 55's equally well at 100yds all well under an inch.Win 64gr pp shoot just over an inch. But every rifle likes what it likes. What ammo are you shooting?
BOB.

My 700 SPS 1/12 shoots 55 gr Winchester bulk at about 1/2 MOA. Remington UMC 50 gr HPs at about 1-1/2 MOA, and Winchester 45 gr HP's at about 1/2 MOA. I've got a couple of thousand rounds of Winchester 64 gr Power Points, and they absolutely group horribly. Fortunately I've got another semiauto rifle that loves them.

I'm still experimenting, and hoping that it will group the Hornady 55 grain VMax, as I've had extremely good luck with this round in other rifles in the past.

What iblong said, anything from 40 grain to 55 grain in soft point, hollow point or plastic tipped work fine out of my CZ 527 American with a 1-12" twist. In fact my CZ with its 1-12" shoots 55 grain VMAX or BalTip's way better than my Tikka T3 in 22-250 with a 1-14" twist!

One thing I notice is basicaly everyone with a 1:12 .223 says 40 and 50 gr are great. a few people say 55 and 60 don't shoot well but I suspect they need to try more factory loads or work up a good handload.

my cz so far shoots 40 grain v max really well and 36 varmint grenades are decent too. Hopefully it will like 55 or 60 for the song dogs if i can ever find any on the shelf.

My Tikka T3 Lite (older gun with 1/12 twist) will shoot anything up to 60 grains with excellent accuracy. Have not tried over 60 in it so not sure about 62 grainers.

Your two inch best groups may not be so much about bullet weight as about bullet quality, load quality and suitability, etc. And, maybe it's just a 2MOA gun!
