What is best resizing lube?

Just recently, it seems I've been having trouble with resizing lubrication. I'm NOT reforming, just resizing. I'm using a spray-on lube that has worked well for me in the past, but isn't now! Will lubes go bad over time? What do other reloaders find is the best for them? JUST ASKING!

You will get a lot of opinions on this.

The absolute best is Imperial Sizing Die Wax, period, no question, no others need apply.

It is not needed for normal resizing. Lots of lubes out there that will work just fine. The important thing is to get them applied properly. They all require a little different technique.

I like a water soluble lube because it is so easy to remove. Not the best lube but good enough for normal reloading.

I use Hornady "One Shot" w/ revolver cartridges.

Most of my rifle loading is for bolt action varmint/predator rigs. With these, I use the Lee Collet Sizer Die. It only neck sizes. Do not lube cases with this die, but do have to clean/lube the die every so often.

BUT, Imperial!!!! It is so slick!!! For a small price try it. Even for full-length re-sizing it is awesome. For neck sizing w/ conventional neck dies, E-Z Way, the maker of Imperial, also makes a neck sizing lube. Careful when you open it because it is not a wax. Instead it is a fine black powder and will go all over the place if you don't watch it.

Imperial.

I also use LeClear Industries (Imperials mfr) dry neck lube. My tin is 25 years old so it may have new name. I did put it in a 3 diameter tin about 1/2" deep so I can just dip the case necks as I go.

Have you changed the way in which you apply the spray lube? I've found that One-Shot wont "flow" onto a portion of the case that is not exposed to the direct spray. I stand the cases in a very shallow reloading block and spray 2 sides of the case holding the can at about a 45 degree angle to get some into the mouth portion. I hope this'll help.

I use Imperial dry neck lube for the insides of my case necks IF I have to full-length resize them and have the expander ball working through the inside of the case. I also use Imperial sizing wax on the outside of the case. That stuff is the best thing since sliced bread IMHO. I bought a little tin of each the dry and the wax about 15+ years ago and I'm sure there will be plenty left in the containers when I pass on to my home in Heaven 15 to 20 years from now. For the dry lube, I just place the open tin on my reloading bench, take 5 or 6 fired casings in my hand, bump the case mouths on the loading bench so they are all even on the mouth end and then bump them up and down in the dry lube a couple of times to get the lube inside the case mouth. Then I bounce them gingerly on the cover for the tin to get the excess out of the case necks and off the outside of the case neck. When I have all my empties dry lubed in the necks, I take the cover off tin of Imperial sizing wax, rub my thumb gently into the wax, then rub my thumb and forefinger together and then take an empty casing and rub the wax onto the body of the casing. It doesn't take much, so get just a wee bit on your thumb and forefinger.

When I am done resizing, I use a clean dry rag to wipe off the wax. If I am having trouble getting the wax off, I'll dump the brass into the tumbler to get the remaining lube off.

Thanks Silverfox for the explaination on how you use Imperial Sizing Die Wax and the dry neck lube. I ordered one of each and the order just came in today. I wasn't sure what the best way to use these products was but I will try what you do.

Agree 110%. Imperial Sizing die wax is the best product that I have ever used and I have tried them all.....

I have always used Hornady One-Shot with good luck. If you are just doing a few cases the Imp. would probably be best for your applications. I am generally doing hundreds of cases at a time, so the One-Shot gets the call.

SteveM--I like Imperial sizing wax because that way I get to "fondle" all my casings individually  /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif  /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Seriously, I'm not sure if my method takes much longer than yours because as I pick up a casing to put it into the case holder (and you have to pick your casings treated with Hornady One-Shot as well), I am gently stroking the Imperial sizing wax on the casing walls and into the shell holder it goes. I do hundreds of casings at a time too, but I don't want to get into a race with you. It sounds like you have a method that works well for you and mine works just fine for me.

Mark,

Enjoy the Imperial, it's great!!

Dillon-XL650,

I have not had trouble w/ the "One Shot". But, I must confess w/ a little "analisim" here. I use the One Shot primarily w/ revolver cartridges. The dies are almost w/out exception, Carbide or Nitride sizers. I lube anyway.

So honestly, if this lube is not up to the task, I may not be aware of it, since none of my revolver loading is presently w/ plain steel dies right now.

What I have been using the last 4 yrs. is the mink oil paste that you put on your boots to water-proof them. This may sound silly but a gunsmith is the one who told me about it. It's all he uses now. It only takes just a very light layer.
