What is considered big for an eastern red fox?

Anyone know how big red fox generally get? I'm in eastern VA if it matters.

I caught a male red in a 1.5 CS about a week ago that I think is pretty nice size. Layed out on the ground, he measured 44" from the tip of his nose to the tip of his tail and 16" from his shoulder blade to his paw. Is this a big one? Just started trapping so I dont know for sure. He was a lot bigger than the other 3 I've caught so far.

Thats a big one, but nothing real out of line.
Your measurement from the tip of the nose to the tip of the tail is real misleading since no one really measures that way.

If you measure from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail you'll have a bteer idea of how the critter ranks with its relitives.

Most Red's on our side of the mighty Miss. range from 24" to 29", tip of nose to base of tail. If you take 15" inches or so off your 44" inch measurement for the tail, your back into the 29" body size.
