What is the best 224 bullet?

Need some help from you experts out there. I am wanting to develop an accurate load for some 50 to 60 grain 224 bullets. These will be loaded in sabots in a 30-06 cartridge. I have the once fired 30-06 cases and sabots for the 224 bullets. i understand the best bullets for coyotes and such, run from 50 to 60 grains. I think I am looking for a hollow point, boat tail bullet. I'm trying to use the Baikal 12 ga over the 30-06 as an all around gun to keep from buying another weapon.

So what do you experts recommend? Set me straight please.

Thanks OB

As I answered before in a nother place and time 52 gr. Gr. Hornady Amax works well for me.

Why do you want a reason to not have another gun.......

+1 on 50gr v-max good rnd. In my experience you would be better served to load somthing like a 125gr TNT or something in that weight class. .224 sabots for .30 cal IMHO are extremely in-accurate. I shot the rem accelerator and it was horrible. Everybody I know says the same. I would save my money for loading fast 06 buletts.

Well I guess you all know best. I have some store bought accelerators and I'll go try em tomorrow. If they arn't even close I'll just get some 125 grain 30-06 rounds and forget the 224 sabots. Or just sell the Remington 742 and get a real critter gun.

Thanks for all the help.

NO I don't reload yet. I bought all the equipment several years ago and never got around to it. Now I have become very interested in predator hunting and am looking at working up a critter load for my combo rifle/shotgun. 12ga for in close and a 224 in a 30-06 to reach out. I'm going to try the factory accelerators today and may just forget about it and buy a real critter gun. Will have to sell off some of the armory to make room in the gun cabinet. Boy I hate it when that happens.

If you actually want to hit what you are shooting at, I would fore go the sabots and use either a 110 or a 125 grain 30 cal. bullet. I think Hornady makes a 110 grain Vmax. The 125 would be a bit better for windy conditions, though.

The sabot-ed rounds are not known to be particularly accurate. MOC (minute of coyote) at 100 yards is about what you may get. It could be better, but why even try when either of the 30 cal bullets mentioned ought to shoot well.

I shot a lot of groundhogs, up to about 200 yards, years ago with a Rem. 700 with a 4X scope shooting a 110 grain round nose soft point. It was devastating on the GH's, but windrift was a problem at longer ranges.

Yeah my suggestion would also be the 110 vmax for the 30 cal guns. When I start to reload for my .308 I will be throwing some 110 vmaxes in the brass to give them a try.

OK You guys are right. The 55 grain accelerators are a bunch of ^%&$*. I could have done better with a rock ! So now I'm off to find some 110 and 125 grain vmaxes.

Thanks for all the good advice.
