i am new to hunting coyotes and fox.what gun should i use for coyote in ny.also i have a .22mag with a scope light will this work for fox and coyote or neither.any info would help

Bryan, Your .22 mag. will do a good job on fox, but is to lite to be a good stopper for coyotes. If you will be hunting where the shots will be 40 yrds. or less a shotgun with BB`s for fox or no.4 Buckshot if coyotes might come in. As for a rifle the .222 or .223 will work great, but if you want to save the hides the .17 Remington is the only way to go.

If you weren't aware, NYS regulations were changed this year, and you can now hunt furbearers at night with a light with: centerfire rifles, handguns in any caliber, shotguns with any size shot. We've been hunting with .22-250's and lights.

Brian,
I hunt in the Catskills...WE are loaded with Coyotes....I can't say what is a perfect caliber because I've only shot them with big game rounds, 30-06 and 30-30s....What I can say is that there are some big dogs in NY. My uncle shot one a few years back that we weighed at the taxidermist's in Delhi,NY. After hanging on a pole for 3 days this guys weighed out at 55lbs.....And I've had some get by that I'd swear were 1/3 bigger than that guy....I would agree that if you are concerned with keeping the hides in good condition than stay away from shooting them with the larger calibers. I shot one a few years back with a 30-06 that left an exit hole I could drop a grapefruit through. Anyway, good luck !!!

I shoot a .223 with 55 gr. ballistic tips. It is fairly fur friendly, and does the job much better than the smaller .17. I have seen the .17 shooter unable to shoot, when there was a bush, or even a bit of grass between him and the animal. Also, the .17 is not always fur friendly. At close range, I've seen it blow holes as big as my hand. So, I would suggest the 222, 223, or something in that range. Randy
