What Makes transforms a bad caller into a good caller and a good caller in to a great

A few years ago I spent the better part of a year trying to call a coyote/Fox/ or bobcat. I spent many mornings and nights without ever achieving my goal. Then the following year I called in, and killed, my first coyote, followed by my first bobcat. After that I have enjoyed many more succesful trips. Although I do not consider myself a good caller yet, I do feel that I have improved. So, this is a question I have often asked myself, "what am I doing different". And really the only things I can come up with are:

1. I have more confidence.
2. Although I still use the same call, Tally-ho, I can make it variable with more of a jittery tone. (Whether this helps or not I don't know)
3. Locations, I have not only improved the spots I can call, but now no more about where to sit and watch. (thanks to many of you here.

These are a few things I have come up with. My question is what are the things you experts do that makes you more sucesful? I am not asking for every untold secret just thing like: variating calls, use of a howler, etc.

Those are some very good questions. And I think most callers were just like you even the most experienced of callers. We were all beginners at one time, but over the many years of calling, success starts to increase until finally it starts to become second nature.I do think that we will never perfect the art of calling, thats what makes people do it for forty years.IT'S STILL A CHALLENGE.I also don't believe that it is the big things people change that make them become more successful it is the subtle things that make a beginner become a good caller and a good caller become a great one.Tricks of the trade as it were. There is definitely more information today for callers than in years past but ultimitely it comes down to spending as much time as possible in the field experimenting and learning from our mistakes.GOOD HUNTING

I am still learning and always will be but a few of the things that really gave a boost to my success and i see it in the new guys that i take out is the use of a Howler and PATIENCE!!!!!!!.

Dedication to the art! And yes it is an art.Like Ute I believe that it's simple things. Subtle diferences we don't notice for a while ourselves. They never quit learning either. I still make dozens of mistakes each year myself. I know the better callers weed the mistakes out by analyzing them when they happen. They want to know what made that coyote hang up at that particular stand and why. I'm glad these forums are available now so the rest of us can shorten the learning curve a bit, but we still have to pay the dues with time in the field. Jimmie

I'm somewhat of a beginner myself compaired to most of the guys here as I am starting my fourth year. I get better each year and I would say the things that have helped me the most are:
Sitting still
Working the wind
Map recon
Camouflage!
Calling longer
Trying new things

Something I believe has made me better is I stopped trying to eyeball areas that were out of the kill zone.Being right handed I can shoot from just over my left shoulder to about straight out from my nose.
I should say I call pretty thick areas and everything is up close and personal.
When I got used to doing this though,I have had coyotes and fox come up on my hard right, and not see them, and actually stick their nose over my leg and sniff the speaker between my legs. That will definitly cause your crotch area to tighten up!
