Thought I should give an update on the thread I started
earlier on the "Savage Project". Last week, I asked about
pre-fit Savage barrel manufacturers, and this week I have
everything in hand to complete the project, except bullets.
It all started at MidwayUSA where I found a Savage Bolt
head, for the 308 Win. cartridge family, and all of the
extractor and ejector parts, to complete the bolt head, for
simple swaps. Then I talked to Jim, at Northland, and he
happened to have the exact barrel I was looking for. A 260
Rem. chambered SS barrel, 24" length, 1:8 twist, in a heavy
sporter contour(pretty Shilen, with a recessed target crown).
Jim also fixed an oversight I made on the bolt baffle,
switching from a 204 Ruger to a 260 Rem. That box arrived
Tuesday, with the barrel, barrel nut, new recoil lug, bolt
baffle, and a couple of lighter trigger springs. Yesterday
the Norma brass and Go Gauge arrived from Brownells, and the
Forster dies, from Midsouth, are on the Fed Ex truck, out for
delivery.
What panic? I guess I am fortunate to be working on a bolt
action rifle project rather than an AR-15 project.
I have 4 of them in the safe, so I needed a break from ARs
anyway.
The only bad news in all of this is, I leave tomorrow morning
on a long tradition fishing trip, so all of the new stuff
will sit on the shelf until I get back, and have time to
play with guns again.
