What powder type for 30-06, 150 gr. bullets

Hi,

I was wondering what kind of powder y'all using for '06 150 grains bullets. I got some IMR 4064, but some swear by reloader 19, etc. I dunno if powder type has any bearing on accuracy, but I need to shrink the group a little and it'll help keeping the slug in the 3,000fps range. I'm firing it outta a Ruger 77 Mark II rifle, 22" barrell (mauser, of course...)

Thx,

S.

For the 150 grain bullets I use to use IMR 3031 with good success at 2900 FPS, with the 180 grain I use IMR 4350. I usually load up 180 grainers when needed and don't remember my load data for the 150's anymore.

Don't know if it will help but a standard '06 powder for years has been H-4831 and now H-4831sc.

One rule of thumb is that the fuller you can fill the case, the more uniform should be the burn. I forget how to say this, and I don't know if you use the Nosler reloading book but, one of it's nice features is that it gives a "percent of case fill" for each load. Takes some of the guess work out of the work up of a new load.

I think you'll find getting a 150gr bullet of any make over 3,000 fps with 4064 just a little too frisky for comfort. I do load for a friend's Ruger RSI #1 using 52gr Varget, a Fed 210M primer and a 125 gr Nosler BT. This has been a friendly and very accurate round around the farm here.

It would help if you would name the specific bullet you want to use.

H-4895. All the other powders mamed are also great. Tune your rifle for which ever works best Keep in mind-- what group size are you looking for and why? What do you plan on hunting and what ranges do you expect to see them? A difference of +/- 200 feet/sec will make little difference with an 06 under 200 yards. Find a good reloading book like the Sierra or Lee and read up on the theory. Extremely interesting. LOL

IMR-4350 has always worked good for me in 150 and 165 range.
I do not know what the velocity really was but the accuracy was great.

In my Model 700 30-06 I load 59 grains of IMR 4350. I have a 25" Shillen on this 700. I wont tell you what the velocity has been through two or three different brands of chronographs but mine spits them out comfortably over 3000 FPS. I also have a "tight" chamber and neck size my brass.
I also use the max load of 63 grains of Reloader 22 from my Nosler guide that I put behind 165 grain Nosler BT's and they also exceed 3000fps from my 06. Ron

If it won't shoot well with R-19, W760, or IMR4350, get rid of it. Most '06's will shoot well with the right amount of ANY of the three. Other powders will also work well, like 4831sc or varget, but the first three are usually "can't miss" with 150gr bullets in the 30-06. The reason they are considered top performers is because they tend to be most accurate with max or close to max loads.---2MG

Two classic powders for this load are IMR4895 and IMR4064.
Match shooters used these powders with this cartridge and bullet weight with great success for many years. They will not fill the case like the slower powders (H/IMR4350, H/IMR4831), but those slower powders are really better suited to the 180 and heavier bullets. The intermediate powders like Varget and RL19 are certainly worth a try too.

Thanks guys, for the input. Frankie B. the group is about 1 1/2" and even 1" @ 100yd. on a good day, with factory ammo, but I figure I can work up a load for it to improve on that. No particular reason, other than I really like clover leaves;-)

Iron Mike, I will use Fail Safe 150gr. ($27 for 50 at Cabela's). I'm trying to come up with a killer load for a deer hunt in Maine. I really like the Win BT, though, but the Fail Safes out-penetrate just about any other slug out there.

Additionally, I will try to experiment with some really light 100 gr. Hornady bullets, and possibly 110 gr. but these are mostly for punching paper, and maybe varmints if I get a chance this year. The 150 Fail Safes are for deer.

Thanks again to all who took the time to reply.

God bless.

S.
