What powders for 308

If you want best velocity try RE15. But 2,900 fps from a 22" inch barrel from a .308 with 150 gr. is probably asking too much from the cartridge. You should be able to find a nice accurate load at near, but just under max, at around 2,800 fps. That is plenty of velocity for the .308 Winchester. That extra 100 fps won't mean a thing regarding in the field performance. Yet it will mean a lot less trouble and worry about an over pressure load. You have a .308, if you absolutely need more performance, then you have to move up to a larger cartridge to reach that level safely.

I loaded VV-150 using 42.7 grains, 168 SMK with good results. Going to load up some Varget tonight.

Does anybody have a pet load for the 168 SMK? Just curious as I study the manuals and load accordingly.

When the 308 was being shot a lot in competition AA2520 usually won the match. And it meters so accurately, you never have to weigh charges even for 1000 yards.

I use Varget with 155 Bergers and 165 Sierra Gamekings, but I use IMR 4064 with 168 Sierra Matchkings. I've found that if I stay away from max velocities that I get much better accuracy.

I use Varget for .308. I know you are looking for speed but if you go with a heavier bullet you will probably see an improvement in accuracy. The 1:11 twist in your Tikka is better suited for the heavier stuff. The 1:11.25 twist is ideal for the 175SMK so you might try something in the 165 to 180gr. Just a thought.

.308

i thought 1in10 is kida standard for 308 and 30-06 so 1in 11 is a slower twist for lighter bullets am i wrong?? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Please ignore my comment. I "Mispoke". Sorry I had one of those moments where I was thinking 1 thing and typing something else. Your 1:11 twist is middle of the road for the .308 and .30-06. You will probably find it's sweet spot somewhere between 150 to 168gr. Sorry for the confusion.

You did not state your barrel length.

I shot 51.5-52.0g of 748 with the 125-135g bullets.

46-49g of 748 with the 150g bullets at 3000 fps with amazing accuracy!

Good luck!
