What do most guys reccomend for a scope power on a 243? Im thinking 300 is pretty far for me to shoot and 400 would be almost a miracle.Iknow some of you can shoot alot farther but man 400 looks like wayyyy out here for me.4x12 ok or do I need more for the 400 mark like 6x18 or what?
Thanks Ernest

I guess it depends on what you want to do with the rifle. Hunt? What? Target shoot?

For most people, a 3-9x40 is easily good to 300 yards. Or, you could go 3.5x10x40.

If you have plans on practicing and shooting at longer ranges later, then you can go to 4-12x40 or 4-16X, or whatever.

For MOST hunting rifles, I would think a low end of 3X or 4X is a practical place to start. 6X is too much in most cases, but again, it depends.

Again, it is kinda hard to answer your question without more info......

I think you really need to look at what your closest anticipated shot will be, as well as your average shots distance.

Here in MN it see lots of guys running 3-9 scopes. And alsmost every one of them complains of problems picking up moving deer at closer ranges. And most only ever use 9x when sighting in. Most shots in our area on deer probably only average 30-60 yds.

Have to look at the whole picture, not just one segment.

3-9 is plenty to get to 300 yds. A 10x top end may help, but too necessary. I'd say just a 3-9 or ?-10. 4-12 or 14, 16x are nice for the range, but the 4x is pushing it for close in work. 6-18!?!? WAY too high of X on the low end.

Moral of the story, 3-9X. BTW, Nikon BuckMaster 3-9X with NikoPlex is $209 with a free digital camera!

For 300 yards and in, a Leupold 2.5X8 would not be a bad choice. It might would help slightly on the low yardage end but it would lose a bit at the longer range (magnification). Still for hunting big game the 2.5X8 is a great choice when shooting distances are not great.

I have never missed a target because of not enough magnification. I sure have missed some because of too much magnification. FOV beats power every time on moving targets.
