What state has the highest numbers of??

I don't know about the other states but I spoke with Missouri's Chief Furbearer Biologist very recently and got some numbers for my home state. Missouri has an estimated population of 15,000 bobcats and 120,000 coyotes. The latest harvest data indicated a spike in bobcat harvest in 2003 with around 3,000 registered. The cat population is growing, coyotes staying pretty level to slightly upward. Both species of fox have slight downward trends over the last few years according to the data. It wouldn't surprise me if the cat data was somewhat lower than the actual population/harvest. In Missouri when a cat is taken it must be reported to the Conservation Agent of the county that it was taken within two weeks of the close of the season. This is done by phone. More than a few deer hunters shoot cats and don't bother to register them.

You guys are lucky, we don't even have a season for them in WNY State!!!!!! They're around though, just not enough to hunt at this point. I believe near the Adirondacks and the Catskills they have some limited seasons but don't hold me to that. So, my answer is, New York probably is near the bottom for Bobcat numbers. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
