What thermal imaging hand held device do you use?

I am looking at the FLIR ts32 scout. Is it any good? Don't want to buy something that isn't any good.

What do you all think???

The TS 32 Scout is a super nice high end thermal, which model is it that you are thinking of getting as there are quite a few different variations?

I have a PS 32 and love it, it picks up ten times more stuff than I never would have otherwise seen.

Cannot go wrong with a FLIR....

Ps32 is great but only problem you might have is you will want a pvs 14 to go with it or some other night vision. Flir is a great company.

Try searching this Night Calling forum for "PS 32", there is plenty of information of people using it for scanning and detecting, it is kinda like a PVS-14 is to NV, ie it is probably the most versatile thermal tool for the money.

I have a Flir PS 32 and love it. Nothing can get by you. Put it on the instalert mode and the hot object appears red. You can't miss something with the 4 levels of sensativity. It works so good that on a night about 20 degrees I walked a little ways out to put the call and when I started scanning I could see my foot tracks lighting up red in the snow.

I think the PS32 is a sweet spot for these units if it is being used for scanning. The zoom feature is nice once you need a little more detail.

The HS-324 command looks like overkill to me for this role unless you have something else in mind for the unit. I would get the PS32 to scan with and take the difference and put it toward a high end NV scope. You need the detail on the weapon sight......not the detection device.

My .02......

I am using the PS32 it works great for my use which is detecting critters at my normal ranges from 25 yards to 400-500 yards then I follow up with PVS-14 3X lens or D-740 weapon sight for ID/shot placement. My hunting buddy has the FLIR M24 640x480. He had the FLIR 307 but sold it as he wanted a smaller lighter unit that would fit into his BDU pocket the 307 is pretty large but is great of longer ranges past 500 yards.

Phantom223, have you looked through the FLIR M24 640X480?

How do you like that unit and how is the FOV? That is the only other unit I would consider for purchase over and above my PS32....

The FOV on the FLIR 307 only has a 7 degree view, so that would be awful as a scanner but great for picking up some distant detail. Not something I would want to use myself though.

Overall, for price and FOV, it is difficult to beat the PS32, unless you want to add photo and video recording to the unit for another $2,000+, but it is basically the same view.

The M24 640x480 imager is very nice it helps to extend viewing range even at 1X plus the 2X digital zoom works very well on the M24 not pixeling out as bad as the 320x240 PS32 2X digtal zoom. The FOV looks to be the same as my PS32. Overall The M24 is a really nice unit the 30hz frame rate helps on scanning or fast moving game.I really thought hard on buying a M24 320x240 myself but don't what to spend 640x480 money. That said the PS32 does what I need it to do for alot less money and other than the 30hz frame rate on the M24 320x240 mono I can't see myself gaining to much performance wise for the price difference. I am going to be staying with my PS32 for another season at least if I do upgrade down the road from my PS32 it will be the M24 320x240 system unless something new and really cool is out by then. It sure would be cool if FLIR did something like a PS64-Pro model 30hz frame rate and maybe 640x480 imager, blacked out housing tactial/lawenforcement look for 4-5k I would buy that for sure. I love the PS32 body nice size, easy to use controls, and fits my hand like a glove. I have moved past the PS series internal battery that worried me at first it has saved me tons of money in batteries the last year and gives good battery life never ran it dead even with a whole night of hunting several times last fall. I bought a mini USB charge pack for the woods just in case but havent used it in the woods yet its just a back up incase. On the 307 the lens on that unit is great at longer range much better than the PS32 viewing side by side. The down fall is the narrow FOV of the 307 sucked in the woods/brush the the housing is alot bigger than the PS32 or M24 which is why my buddy sold his 307 to buy the M24. To be honest we only need a thermal viewer to spot/detect the M24 or PS32 both do that well at our normal range of 500 yards or less then we use NV to ID/shoot. If someone needs a long range thermal viewer the 307 is the ticket for that task.

Thanks so much for that nice review, I certainly appreciate your really nice assessment of the FLIR 24. I like the fact that the FOV is similar to the PS32, that would be a big plus for me to consider in a future purchase.

I don't need any longer range that 1/4 mile (400-500 yards) as that is plenty for where we are mostly in the woods or swamps, so upgrading to a bigger expensive lens system and imager really isn't a good idea even if it was less expensive since with larger lens you end up with less FOV only good for pin-pointing at long ranges.

The PS32 pretty much is everything I need for our hunts and it gets ALLOT of hardcore use & abuse. You are right, I was also worried about the internal battery but it lasts at least an entire night out and not have to replace it everyday is a big plus too.

I am going to stay with my PS32 for the foreseeable future and keep an eye out for a good deal on a FLIR M24 if one becomes available. That would really be the only other additional thermal I could see that would fit into our kind of use.

Very much appreciate the help on this in a big way!

I was out using the PS-32 again tonight just to check things out and there is NO WAY I will be paying for another scanning thermal with LESS FOV than my PS-32, if anything I would like to have more FOV.

That said, I will be keeping an eye out for a FLIR M-24 if Vic ever has a sale on them I will jump on one....

IZ,

You look like a Cyborg!

Great idea on the head mount and i am hoping the Colorado DOW gets their poop in a group and legalizes NV and Thermal.

My gun is loaded and all i need to do is pull the trigger when i get the go ahead!

Pull the trigger! shoot man shoot, you can use it in NM. I can't tell you how much it will change your night hunting, you will learn a lot when you see animals you where never able to see before . I set up at night allmost the same as i do during the day and they never see you come or go. I know coyotes have better NV than we do but I believe it is near sighted vision for traveling. I figue if Gunner can't see a coyote at 150 yards at night then the coyote can't see us. No way they see as well as us with gen3 and thats why they work the wind so much at nigh. I watched the last triple come charging into a field bunched up then split up and work the field for a scent. I'm sure a lot of the other NV guys will agree, at least on one thing and that is PULL THE TRIGGER.
