What upper on a Plum Crazy?

Recently ordered a Plum Crazy lower and am trying to decide which upper to buy. I am confused! This will be my first AR. I usually shoot a Savage bolt-action 25-06. It will be primarily a truck gun that will go with me daily when I feed my cows. Will also use when calling coyotes as I have started to do some calling this past year. The only AR I have fired was an R-15 so I dont have much of an idea of whats available or best for my situation. Dont shoot paper so extreme accuracy isnt an issue. Do want to be able to kill coyotes out to 250 yards. Thanks in advance for your replies.

Right now I am torn between getting a PC and a NFA 6x45 upper and an R15 in 204 and this is also my first AR

sounds like you dont reload so definately a 223 but as far as brand etc I wish I could help

Should have mentioned I have decided on 223. My big questions are what length barrel, what twist, and should i be looking for a lightweight upper to match up with the lightweight lower for balance and feel.

As far as weight goes , that will be up to you, for a truck gun i would get one in 16" or 18" .750 barrel at gas block and either one of those legths will work great with the 223.

I can get you a prize on a Upper from New Frontier with a Black Hole Barrel on it if you would like?

In my opinion, it would be a mistake to get something without a muzzle protecting device like a break or a flash hider.

If you're going to be using it for a truck gun, I only assume it will spend a lot of time right next to you, muzzle down on the floor board. (in which case an 18" or 20" may suit you better. While a good crown does offer some protection...the standard bird cage flash hider will keep you from having rocks and other crap jammed into your muzzle and damaging it or potentially destroying it.

Normally, I think a flash hider or muzzle break on an AR is pointless, because there is little to no recoil anyway and who are we trying to hide the flash from? It's not like the coyotes are going to shoot back...but in your case. It's probably purdy important.

These are just some 16" set ups with the A2 flash hider, not as suggestions, because I own none of them...mostly just to give you a look at industry price ranges. One of them may be ok for you, but I'd consider the 18" or 20" (maybe longer) if you want your AR to ride "shotgun" so to speak, or it could end up sliding onto the floor.

at $475 MSRP, Rock River Arms - CAR A4 Upper is a good option

at $475 MSRP. Rock River Arms - Mid-Length A4 Upper is ok, but i dont like A2 front sight. ($35 extra to upgrade to a rail gas block)

at $444 MSRP, DPMS Sportacle upper looks nice too

at $495 MSRP, DPMS 16" A3 upper - (upgrade to rail gas block for $20 or low pro aluminum for free)

at $469 MSRP, DPMS Oracle upper

at $465 Stag Arms - Model 3H seems resonable

That would be great WSMBUCK I looked at the New Frontier website and did see they had one complete upper on there. Any and all help appreciated!

Thanks to you too cbass, I was looking at the Rock River Arms website as well. What are your opinions on the Coyote Rifle/Coyote Carbine and the Predator Pursuit models?

I will get you a price, on a couple different lentgh barrels, They dont have to many choices on there website as of yet do to Guido hasnt had the time to update it, but will be working on it when he gets a chance.

But they will build you about anything type of upper you want in alot of great calibers. If you have have any questions and cant get ahold of Ashlye at the store give me a call anytime.

In my (limited) experience with production built AR style weapons...all the ones I've seen, shoot and function about the same.
Unless you get into custom built rifles for a special purpose...I don't know if you can go wrong, as long as you're getting one with the things you need.
About the only things that are different are all options that you can likely either upgrade to, or buy as accessories.

When I think of "truck gun", I think of the very first Colt AR my uncle owned. It was left behind the seat at night, fired wolf ammo, and has been defiantly run though the gauntlet in the last 15 years and still shoots and functions great. If you're looking for something that may spend the night in the truck on occasion, the longer life span of the chrome lined barrels may be something to consider so you don't have to worry about having your barrel rust apart.

I have no loyalty with any company when it comes to these kinds of guns, what large companies don't tell you, is that many of them get their parts from the same places anyway. Do you really think every AR builder has a factory set up to MAKE their own trigger springs or gas tubes?
Companies that DO, sell them to everyone.

Get a warranty, get the available options you want or need and it's very hard to go wrong these days, regardless of who you're getting it from.

Talk with them today and said they are sold out of the 223's right now but should be able to have you one built in 2 weeks since they already have more barrels from Black Hole on order. Price will be $499 with the Poly 3 SS barrel from Black Hole. Let me know if you need anymore info be happy to help.

What about twist? For my uses will I see any difference in 1:8 vs 1:9? Seems as if these are the two most common on the complete uppers I have looked at online.

1 in 8 will be great for you to be able to shoot the heavier rds if you would like and all the lighter stuff without any problem, 1 in 9 sometimes has problems with 65+ gr bullets.
